p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Summer salvage: Part 6: Kingbird chicks "bad light"

In this series, I've been tracking the progression of an Eastern kingbird nest and chick-rearing over several weeks earlier this summer. Part 5 shows the chicks in about mid-stage of their development. It also has links to previous parts in the series.

July 19 was a challenging day, almost six weeks since I photographed the nest being built. By mid-late July, the sun had moved such that the nest was in pretty lousy light, even on a good day. The weather was changing and especially on the afternoon of the 19th, the sun was in and out a lot. I got pressed for time with other commitments. Still, I tried to make the best of what I had. Note how much the chicks have changed in a matter of days!

1. The chicks still have a hearty appetite!

2. It's a little hard to tell who's feeding who in this picture (both parents feed the chicks).

3. Apparently, parental visits aren't always about food. Parents seem to check on the chicks periodically and keep the nest clean by flying the "poop sacs" out and dropping them far well away from the nest.

4. While dragonflies were the most common food fed to the chicks, several other insects were in their diet too.

5. As the chicks matured, they'd inadvertently alert me when the parents were incoming and when to start shooting.

6. It was just astounding to see how the chicks had matured over the course of one week!

7. Though the light was "wrong" when I got to the site in the afternoon, I decided to try to work with it anyway. I thought it helped emphasize the drama and vulnerability of the nest.

8. I think the eggs are laid and chicks are hatched a day apart. I think that lag in maturity can be seen here.

9. I ended up being really glad I decided to work with the light even though it was a challenge.

10.

11. I loved the way the light highlighted the cobwebs: what a metaphor!

Thank you psharvic. Between light and stray nest pieces, I has some challenges but can't complain at the opportunity presented.

Thanks Dave. Once I saw the nest was going to "stick", I knew it would be a fascinating opportunity.

Thank you BB; I'm glad you're enjoying the chapters. Even though it didn't seem like it at the time, it's somewhat of a 'short story'!

Thanks Ron. I think there'll be one more set. (I tried to imagine collapsing the whole thing down to 12 images, then 6, then 3, then 1). Tough for me to do...

Thanks Morris. I thought of you when the light went bad. Thanks for the inspiration to keep trying. More to come...

Thank you Scott. Not quite eye level. The nest tree is shown in Part I . I was shooting with a long lens from about 50 ft away.

Two years ago I got lucky in the same spot and actually did have an almost eye-level view. Pics are here if you're interested.

Thanks Birdie. The spider webs really popped in that light and seemed so appropriate with the subject matter. I was glad they were there!
