p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 not as sharp as Canon 24-70 f2.8 II?

Tried out a friend's new Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 while we were in the studio, and found it slightly soft/smeary compared to my Canon 24-70 f2.8 II. This was at f6.3, 1/200 SS and iso 100, using studio strobes on a 5d mk4. It also gave me renewed appreciation for how incredibly sharp my 70-200 f2.8 II is at the same exposure settings.

Anyone else find this is the case? Obviously not a controlled head to head, but I was a little disappointed.

It tested as 'not as sharp' as the Canon, but soft/smeary at f/6.3 has me reaching for other explanations. It should be razor sharp at that aperture.

Has your friend seen similar results in other conditions?

He loves it. I think he had the first version of the Canon L 24-70 f2.8 though, so the Sigma Art was a significant upgrade.

I did notice that it was quite sharp at 50mm, but on the widest end of 24mm it was a little soft even stopped down.

Great lens though, I'm still a little tempted getting it but I have a fantastic copy of the Canon L 24-70 f2.8 II. Perhaps once they get a bit cheaper on the used market.

I'd add that generally absolute sharpness isn't necessarily my absolute goal for my lenses, but was surprised that it wasn't as good as my other Art lenses (I have the 35, 50 and 85 Sigma Art as well). I suppose compromises have to be made with zooms. It's also hard to compete against class leading lenses like the Canon L 24-70 f2.8 II and 70-200 f2.8 II.

Roger's take on the 24-70/2.8 OS | Art mirrors your impressions.

The 24-70/2.8L II is just an outstanding lens, essentially a bit ahead of its time. It competes well with Sony's class-leading 24-70/2.8 GM, lagging potentially in terms of rendering but certainly not sharpness, and remains sharper than Nikon's 24-70/2.8E VR update, this Sigma, and will likely still be sharper than Tamron's 24-70/2.8 VC G2 update which is closely based on the original's formula.

The Canon is also fairly light and compact, which was one of Canon's goals, so its only real fault is the lack of IS which is becoming more important as sensor resolution increases.

So if you have a fantastic copy of the Canon lens, it's hard to make an argument for a switch; even if you are using (or switch to/rent) a 5Ds R, there's only a small opportunity for the Sigma to produce better image quality as you're balancing OS versus acuity.

I'd had in mind to get the new Sigma 24-70 Art to replace my aging Canon 24-105 f4 L Mark I and even more aging Canon 24-70 f2.8L Mark I, but as with others I was cooled down by the blog post from Lens Rentals. The link is here (doesn't seem to work on the previous post on this page)
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/07/lensrentals-com-review-the-new-sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm-art-series-lens/

The one to watch now is the new version of the Tamron 24-70 f2.8:

But I'll probably stick with my Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art, Canon 50mm f1.2 L, and Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art as these are amazing. I use two bodies routinely, a 5DS-R and one of two 5D-IV's so using primes is rather easier than switching lenses on one body in my case.

Maybe Klaus (Photozone.de) is going to shed some light on the matter soon. After all he has already tested the 135/1.8 which was announced at the same time as the 24-70 - but last I heard, he's in the Australian wilderness shooting with the new Olympus 12-100 lens, so it may take him a while.

Interesting, yeah Lensrental's review pretty much aligns with my experience with the lens - specifically this statement: "At 24mm, this lens was a real under performer for me, especially wide open. At 50mm-70mm, it was good, but nothing to write home about."

I don't necessarily need razor sharpness wide open everywhere on a general range zoom, but the difference in sharpness between 24mm and 50mm was immediately noticeable when I zoomed into the image preview on my 5dm4 - made that much more concerning by the fact that I was at an exposure/aperture that should have yielded optimal sharpness. I suppose I am spoiled though by the Canon L 24-70 II lens though. As I mentioned previously, that lens and the Canon L 70-200 f2.8 II are two of the sharpest lenses I've ever owned on any system (Canon, Sony, Fuji or Nikon).

I wonder if it's a firmware/focus issue considering the lens is so new. I think it might be too early to make a final call on this lens. I really want to like the lens even still

I have a similar body setup, but I sold my 5ds-r and just rent one when I need the extra resolution. I generally find that my 5dm4 bodies are completely fine for 95% of the commercial work I do though. Tempted to get another 5ds-r though as a dedicated studio body though, as I'm always blown away by the files at base iso. I have the sigma art 35, 50 and 85 and the 85 Art is just awesome. I've started to use the 85 art more for commercial jobs and it has a definite mojo

Maybe it was M.A. with the dock for his body and slightly off to your body ask him if you could MA it with the dock for your body you should get better result. There is 16 values to be recorded in the lens to obtain maximum performance .
