Looks more like a difference in post processing to me. Yours looks more sharpened and much noisier and more posterized. It's also a higher resolution file.

Here is the jpeg straight from RAW conversion, no other pp applied and about a 50% crop. Not my fault it is a higher resolution file. Sorry about the terrible noise and posterization.

Those are better processed for the noise for the most part. There is something seriously going on with your GBH shot though, nasty noise and lack of detail, it looks like you might have tried to raise the shadowed area a bit too much in brightness. Anyway it still just looks like the difference is nothing more than a matter of post processing, you seem to be more comfortable with the sharpening slider than I am.

_______
You've got to be kidding. The image is as "quiet" as the GBH flying in the distance

I'm just telling you what I see on the displays I have available. Yes the background is nice and noise reduced but if you look in the area under the wing that is facing the viewer there is some serious nastiness like a shadow that has been lifted too much. That is what I see if I'm being honest.

Well we all see what we want to see, and we have different monitors. What I see is that the images I posted show more detail and no more noise than your hummer shots.

But just for you, I cleaned up the GBH as bit.

As long as it's working for you. I know if I don't look at my images with a critical eye I never improve.

A zoom is not a 600mm lens, nor is a 400mm lens with a TC. Neither Sigma nor Tamron makes a 600mm lens.

Sigma have made a 600mm f/8 lens. It is a mirror lens, and they no longer make it, so you still have your words correct. In fact, I did not try to prove you wrong, I just answerd the question:

Imagemaster wrote:
And what makes you think f6.3 is perfectly normal for a 600mm lens? The best 600mm primes are f4, and nobody even makes a 600mm f5.6 that I am aware of.

To that question, what makes me think f/6.3 is perfectly normal for a 600 mm lens, I think what makes it normal is what apertures people actually use to take pictures at focal lengths approximately 600mm. It is irrelevant if they use zoom lenses or teleconverters or pure 600mm prime lenses currently made, as long as what they use are real solutions people compare for prize, weight and performance.

Even if I think f/6.3 is slow for 400mm, I perfectly understand why it is made and why people buy it, I just think it is slow for 400mm.

Of course it is slow for 400mm. That is why it is at a price that many can afford.

I am certainly one of those people who appreciates a smaller lens and prepared/happy to take the trade off with a slower max aperture and lower price.

I suddenly came to own a Canon 100-400/4.5-5.6 lens. Go figure. So the Sigma / Tamron are out of my scope now, but I'll still be watching this space. I can imagine one of those two is a great, inexpensive and unencumbering way to get to 400mm for those who have never owned a lens in the range. I know getting to 400mm was a revelation for me - I have greatly expanded my possibilities (even though there are known limitations to exploring that so far), so allowing more people to do this can only be welcome.

Very similar to the new Sigma 100-400, except for the (optional) tripod ring; weight is very similar too. Hopefully a bit better in the IS department where the Sigma seems to be less convincing. If it has better closeup image quality than the Canon 100-400II I'm certainly interested.

I tried the Sigma. IQ is terrific and the VR/IS is fine IMO, not great but certainly serviceable. The autofocus speed again was not great but good enough for most things. Can't understand the lack of a tripod ring though. I am going to try the Tamron (my pre-order is in), buy the tripod ring, and see how it compares. Regardless, ten years ago, who would have imagined having such range, IQ, and VR in such a small package and at a $799 price point?

I have never been very happy with my Nikon 80-400 g lens. Am hoping one of the tamron/sigma variants has good sharpness, reasonable focus speed across the range. What I'm really hoping for is probably a sigma sport version or a tamron g2 version...or a Nikon 80-400 e fl! I like a two lens combo for wildlife..my 500mm for long range, the 80-400 (or 100-400) for things closer in.

I thought the Sigma 100-400 f/6.3 is getting good reviews, supposedly quite sharp at 400mm.

I think I went Nikon Id consider the 300 f/4 PF even though a prime is more limiting the IQ and AF speed are very good and its so light.

I have the 100-400II and I find absolutely no problem whatsoever with its image quality close up.
