Hm, very interesting, Fred. I am not sure since I am pretty happy with the first version of the CV 35mm f/1.2. I need to temper down my GAS. I have too many lenses already.

I used to think that fast smallish E-mount lenses would be great for the Sony E-mount cameras. But with the TAP, I kind like those lenses to be in the Leica-M mount to get the AF capability. Of course, the obvious drawback is the lack of exif data. And the market segment for the manual focus Leica-M mount lenses is larger than just strictly MF E-mount version. Just my opinion, of course.

I like 40 better than 35 for portrait, so: 16-35, 40, 55, 85, 135 are perfect focal range for me. Love to see its review.

Well, I am a happy owner of the CV 65, so have to say I have high hopes...

If it performs like the 65/2, then yes. I was just looking at 50/1.2 Nikkors images the other day wishing I still had mine.

50mm is a bit too narrow for me on FX and the 40/1.2 would go fantastically with the 85/2.4 Lox and 180/4 APO CV and 21/2.8Lox as a great landscape set.

Hopefully it will be fine wide open and stunning stopped down a bit.

Anyone have an idea of what the MSRP here in the States might be based on the quoted Yen price?

It all depends.

I'm honestly feeling like going through my lens collection and selling stuff that doesn't measure up to the CV65/2 and only using glass of that caliber for landscape (right now that seems to be limited to the Lox 21, Batis 135 and various Otii). I suppose the Sigma 135/1.8 and Samyang 135/2 probably cut it as well. But most of those lenses are prohibitively huge. :/

If the CV 40/1.2 fits in with that crowd, I'll buy one for sure.

Let's not get expectation too high for this one!
I think there's a good chance it'll be a very useful lens.

But I'm sure if it were APO and sharp across the field wide open at this speed it would be HUGE. Not to say expensive. But I have more grasp of optics than of pricing economics, so I am more sure about HUGE.

And it's not.
It's about the size of classic fast normals.

Now while I'm sure it can improve on classic fast normals, this is not going to be a 40mm version of the 65.
I"m guessing very soft off axis wide open, probably quite a bit of axial colour.

If it's sharp in the centre at wide apertures, and sharp across the field when you stop down, likely I'm in.
But it would be a pity if every one was "GASP compact ultra fast lens not nearly as technically good as slowish large APO normal!"

Of course, there's always the chance of an optical miracle.

But the real action, it seems to me, is finding out if there is a usefully sharp central area wide open (so that the speed is useful rather than pointless bragging rights that make it bigger) and what the rendering is like. I doubt if axial colour will be super well corrected, but that's OK if the key features are in place.

I just want it to be razor sharp at f2 with a clean image and I'll be happy. Sick of adapting my Voigtlander 40mm f2.

i don't really care if it's razor sharp at any aperture, but if it draws nicely i'll probably buy one. not a big fan of the look of the cv 35/1.2 so i'm not really expecting to like it.

If it's anything close to the 65 I'm in . Funny thing I noticed testing the CV 35 1.7 it seems like 37mm compared to my FE35 1.4. I would not want this any longer than 40 getting close to the 65 as it is. Maybe I share the frustration of many and that's the 35mm focal length. Our choices are not so diverse in choices. They have a 35 I think a 1.2 coming also.

I think for some of us our whole mindset has changed after getting the VC 65 as we just got really spoiled with top of the line quality. We need to see this a lot wider like 35mm

Maybe we will get surprised by VC here. I sure hope so

Looks super-appealing, but it's just not going to fit for me. I have Loxia 35mm and am planning to add the CV 65mm.

I'm guessing this 40mm will have a lovely bokeh, and it might well be a nice counterpart to the not-great-wide-open Loxia 35, but sadly I just don't have the budget to support two lenses of similar focal lengths.

It's just so great to see Voigtlander strongly supporting the FE mount. Love my CV 12mm and am looking forward to the 65mm (will buy after selling my FE 55mm 1.8).

Yes, for me a progression of ~2x FOV primes for two kits, one more wide & one more tele, would be:

15mm/4.5 CV
35mm ZM or CV
65mm f/2 CV
135mm f/3.4 Telyt

or

21mm Lox
41mm CV
85mm ZM or Lox
180mm CV

Choices are nice to have, unless you are my bank account

I have the tiny FF 40mm F2.0 Nikon mount Voitlander. I mount it on the Canon and Sony cameras with adapters. Cost something like $400. I really don't want/need a F1.2 MF lens for double or triple the price.

Which makes it cheaper than the Panasonic 40mm f1.2 for a much, much smaller format; and cheaper than the Fuji 56mm f1.2 lens for a considerably smaller forma, and cheaper than the somewhat long in the tooth Canon 50mm f1.2. (though without AF)

I suppose it depends what excellent, but for sheer optical quality I will be amazed if it matches the 65 for this speed, price and size. To match the staggering quality of the 65 and make it much smaller and much faster would be a *very* expensive undertaking - not a 10% more undertaking.

That doesn't mean it won't be excellent, depending on what you mean by 'excellent'. Probably better than the Canon L 1.2/50. My fear is that the CV65 may have changed our ideas of what 'excellent' is in ways that will make us disappointed in the quality of anything that isn't a behemoth...

It hasn't been announced by Cosina on their Japan web page yet but the date and price sound realistic so if the rumor is correct and 10/5 is the real release date in Japan, Cosina should be announcing it very soon. They usually announce lenses at least 3 weeks before release date and now it's already slightly less than 3 weeks to 10/5. Following the announcement, the lens would normally become available for pre-orders within a day or so (in Japan).

I will definitely get one on release day (already tried out a prototype at CP+ back in February), will pre-book at Map Camera.

Then you should love this except for the weight: for all my caution about expecting too much, I think it'll be a step above the 1.4/40 CV.

The 35 they have coming is f/1.4, an E-mount redesign of their M-mount Nokton Classic 35/1.4. That's the one I'm waiting for (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was announced around the same time as the 40/1.2).
