Thanks for doing this Guy. Very interesting comparison. Looking forward to the comparisons with the Loxia 35.

Loading the Big Bronco test. That way you folks can play

CV since there is no EXIF in order just like the FE

1.7/2/2.8/4/5.6/8/11

I have infinity shots as well but I need to process those out.

CV indeed sharp in the centre, but even at f4 and f5.6 it seems to have a fair bit of astigmatism in the corners; sharpish but in that wonky astigmatic way whereas the ZA looks great. Interesting to see if that goes away with the 5m

Wow, you can really see the field curvature of the CV wide open by how sharp that telephone wire is in the upper left compared to the wall:

Need to find that field curvature correction optic to put on the front of the CV!

I found it in stock. Going to buy it tomorrow. I think if it works this could be a awesome travel lens

I'm interested in a 35mm option that's a great landscape or non-AF candid lens. The 35/2.8 Sony is great for what it brings to the table, but sharpness wide open, contrast/pop, sun-stars, and flare/ghosting are not in its DNA.

Agree John. This has the potential to be that nice small lens. Hope to have the front filter soon. Adapter is coming from China although mine seems to have a little extra will see.

Was thinking of getting a Loxia 35 this weekend, but maybe the CV 35 is a better option?

We could do a Loxia 35 vs CV 35 shoot out whenever Guy gets the front lens. I have a great copy of the Loxia.

Agree with most of those but not sharpness wide open. My copy was amazing wide open, but never got much better. But really superb wide open - at least as good as some of the best fast 35s stopped down to f2.8. Others have seen this too, so maybe you have a less great copy (it is a bit variable, which is unimpressive for an f2.8 prime)

if anyone is interested here's how it compares to some other rangefinder 35s (lux FLE, zm 35/1.4, and lux pre-asph) on a kolari UT a7. i believe the pcx filter can bring it close to this performance on a stock camera.

also, here's how they compare on an m9.

Another vote for great sharpness wide open. I would say great contrast and good CA correction as well.
Agree not the best sunstar and flare resistance.

If I could combine my Loxia's sunstar rendering and build with the FE 35/2.8's optical performance, I would very happy.

Well, not fully, unfortunately. Takes stopping down to f/5.6 to get rid of it.

That VC 35/1.7 is a really great lens for the price. The filter should help a lot, I'd think. I had one on my M240 for a bit... ended up switching to the 35/1.4ZM, but the VC really was just as sharp as the Zeiss, or close enough anyways.

I say guys, how do you deal with the infinity issue when using a PCX filter on the CV35/1.7 ?. AFAIK this lens has no internal shims to remove.
According to a rough calculation, a 5m PCX filter reduces the focal length of a 35mm. lens by 0.25mm. Most adapters are a fraction of mm. shorter than normal but 0.25 seems a bit too much.
Do you try different models until stumbling into one that is thin enough ?.

Yes if you can't get in to take out any shims or make any adjustments than we have to look at adapters that give us more leeway on infinity. Phillip has recommended one which I have ordered plus I ordered a Fotodiox one as well. I came up with a thought which I may try on a older adapter is take the rear mount off and grind down the inside of the mount to make it thinner which in theory would do it. Obviously you can't go to far because you don't want to grind down to far that it will make it weak.

I also have yet to take this lens apart. I don't know anyone has actually.

The adapter I have right now a Fotosy one I actually can go past infinity. I'm not sure if it's enough though. I need the filter. I'll have that next week.

I have no problem destroying a 20 dollar adapter to get this to work. Lol

Dremel man at your service. Lol

this is a great review, could have saved Guy some time

little disappointed to see that the T-stops of the zm 35 f1.4 is basically 1.8, and the CV 35 is f2, based on the loxia being f2. The FLE looks to be T1.4 or close to it.
