I need a lens for my 3rd body for NFL and PAC 12 this week. Right now, I'm carrying a 70-200/2.8E and a 400/2.8G, both on D5s. Until I replace it with a D850, I'm using my D500 as a third body. So weight and size is important.

I'm looking for a light weight wide to medium range zoom for the D500. I could stick my 24-70/2.8E on it, but that's heavish and big, and not as wide on DX as I'd like. I could use my 14-24/2.8, but that's still a little short on DX. I'm a NPS member so I don't feel right with 3rd party options like the Sigma 17-50, otherwise I'd try to get away with my Sony RX100 III. I don't know enough about mirrorless options at f/2.8 with the focal length range that I need.

I'm looking at a 17-55/2.8 DX or the 16-80/2.8-4. I'm a little concerned about the latter stopping down as I don't want to go beyond ISO 2500 on the D500 at night. It's a much lighter option and probably wouldn't need to use it beyond 50mm on the D500.

At what focal length does the 16-80 go down to f/3.2? What about f/3.5?

Thanks

I don't have this lens so can't test actual transitions but I did find this online.

The maximum aperture changes with focal length as follows:

16mm = f/2.8
24mm = f/3
35mm = f/3.3
50mm = f/3.5
80mm = f/4

I do have the 17-50 Sigma, if you happen to use flash that lens will sometimes lockup the camera after 1 shot so I would not recommend it for that reason. It is a very sharp lens though for DX and is lighter/smaller than the 17-55 f2.8.

The Siggy 17-50 requires a firmware update that will fix the lockup issue on some Nikon bodies. I had to send mine in as it would lock up my D7200. I shipped it to them, they fixed it in about one day and shipped it back. No charge. Didn't even charge me for return shipping (as I remember, though I could be wrong about that). I would check with them regarding a specific body before purchasing however. It is a great DX lens.

That's great, thank you.
