This is the gears I take out with me these days:

(1) Low light: 1DX + 80-200L ("The Pipe")
(2) All else except "low light" and in-flight shots: dRebel T6 + 100-400 II.
(3) BIF shots: 1DX + 100-400 II (Lens switching on 1DX is a bit of a handicap here.).

It's not bad for using two zooms, one of which is 25 yrs old.

So you take out that gear to your back yard and let the pet herons run around I assume?

Nice shots.

Almost that.......those are bona fide wild herons, just that I have perfected my baiting technique.

Makes perfect sense, two cameras - two lenses that give you 80-640 (equivalent). You, good Sir, are a genius as always.

Trust me guys, in bird photography it all comes down to baiting.

(Bait fish is significantly cheaper than long lenses )

I can't remember the last time I used my 7D2. Pretty much my 5D4, 1.4 III and 100-400 II. My lens switching pain in the rear is with my 24-70 II. I am considering selling it and getting another FF. 5D3 which I now wish I had not sold. Maybe a 6D. Not sure.

That's a hell of a downsizing you've done.

Beautiful work at low light, Peter. Love the feather details, the catchlight; especially the Green Heron. It is not easy to get this green heron.

Thank you Tam, every fall a few Green herons manage to find me, and they make the most agreeable and rewarding little subject. They are usually very active even before sunrise, hunting and fishing like real pros. I love those little birdies.

Superb images, even with a "budget kit" Pareng Pete!

Meantime, the Sony RX10 IV is a very tempting birding camera, especially for someone who also shoots video. At BIFs, I'd probably still place my bet on an EOS DSLR + a big white though.

Thank you Pare. Indeed, a number of less expensive, or "economy" if you will, gears could be used for effective wildlife photography, particularly so if one is able to acquire good proximity to their subjects.

However, as you know full well, objective challenges often arise which push us towards higher level gears. Such challenges are related to fast action (BIF), low available light or long distance to our targets.

For this sort of low light series I wished I still had my 400 II, because 100-400 II pushed me to ISO 3200 and 6400 where dRebel T6 files became very noisy. Eeven so, I had to use very inadequate shutter speed of 1/200 to 1/500 sec, resulting in many blurry shots
whenever the bird moved.

Another lovely shot masterfully executed, Pareng Pete!

I envy your having the time to chase our feather friends. I'm so busy lately that I've to content myself shooting "still life".... i. e., heavy equipment parts to facilitate ordering. Perhaps, when the 600 DO is released, I can find more time to bird.

Pareng Romy, when it comes to free time, the answer is obviously in not having to work for living. There are many options of attaining such blessed station in life, e.g. retirement from business/employment, or perhaps finding a marital partner who'd support us. I've chosen the latter option by becoming a kept man. My wife has been reasonably generous w.r.t. my hobbies, to the point of making me independently poor.

People often ponder the dilemma as to whether to pursue more money or more free time. However, as we get older, our time becomes an increasingly precious commodity.

Peter

A recent pilgrimmage I did back in May-June my kit was small

5dsr, 5d MKII modified for IR and the lenses 35L MKI, 24-70MKII, 135L

after my return I celebrated Canada Day at the Bar U Ranch and my kit 5dsr 35L,24-70MKII and 135L

I am beginning to notice a distinct pattern. 35L MKI, 24-70MKII, 135L
