Great shots, even more so they are Jpegs! I would appreciate if you could share your settings

12 bit MRAW is okay but definitely does not hold up great in the shadows with significant banding. If you need to push exposures stay away imo but for weddings it might be more than good enough. I'd have to spend a few days shooting with it and processing before making a real world decision on it though.

Yeah, I noticed that banding in your crop straight away. Oh well.... Might just be better to shoot in jpeg if you really want/need small files. The white balance have to be nailed though, but D850 looks like it is doing pretty good there.

Another thing to note on 14-bit vs 12-bit raw.

Jim Kasson made some test on the D810 and his conclusion was that you could safely use 12-bit at ISO 200 and above. You should not loose any DR by that. ISO 100 was borderline, but you needed to be at ISO 64 before there was a clear DR advantage of going 14-bit.

Other ways to cut down on file sizes are obviously to combine 12-bit lossless compressed with a crop like 5:4 or even 1,2x crop.

These are some great options that I have always missed with both Canon and Sony.

Having fun this evening with portrait shots with Marisa I was testing the 2 new SB 5000's with an umbrella and soft box. These flashes are just awesome!

Marisa was very patient as she had no makeup just a natural look. She also loves the new D850 and has been taking shots with the D850 alongside the Fuji XT2.

Nikon obviously nailed it!
I've read different comments about Tony, but in general, I think he's doing really good job, at least IMO.

Don't you hate it that they save the worst for last:

High ISO banding? Severe rolling shutter? Anyway, maybe not a problem for what I do.

Thanks for this one Snapsy and Tony. Very informative.

Tony gives a lot of new information in this one.

Better AF than the Sony!

Says he has hated video on every Nikon he has ever tested. Then he says “But…the D850 is an awesome video camera!”

I said it before: I often use video for wildlife documentation. If this D850 video is as good as Tony says it is, I will find a way to effectively “pull” focus in the LCD.

Did you even sink a ball Tony?

The rolling shutter issue is a continuing issue of readout from such a large sensor, and it looks better behaved than on many fx cameras (saw another video sample on YouTube).

Not sure about the banding but the video out I've seen looks great.

Will take a global shutter or higher read out to completely midigate this issue.

Impressive indeed. It not only looks better, but it has much better WB (assuming equivalent settings), and doesn't completely throw in the towel at ISO 25,600 like the other two do.

There is nothing that I don't like about this camera so far, except the price tag.
Dollar ratio is killing us here, but I'll figure it out...simply, once I want it, I'll get it!

thx CK
I am not consistent with my post
I am not doing much with these jpgs
sometimes I apply a creative filter, which effects the tones a bit.
sometimes I put a hint of fade and then raise contrast, when I do that.
your stuff always looks great too!

Thank you too With Lr my workflow for larger series of images is fast and consistent so I am patiently waiting for the updates. PS via Bridge is excellent too for smaller batches but I find it slower or it is just me

Looks excellent and not only for the WB which is miles better. The A7R2 is really looking poor in comparison to both until you put it into the full sampling crop mode where it looks to then do better than the GH5 but still not as good as the 850.

Also good to hear that video (and I assume LV) AF is much, much improved over previous Nikon's and better than the Sony.

These are great. The colors are so amazing and it is awesome to hear you aren’t doing much, if any, pp. You are skilled at setting the scene and using light.

I thought that you swapped that 85 for a 105... I’m on the fence with switching my 35 for the 28 and adding a 70-200 to get some E glass in my life. I do like 35/85, but since getting the 58 a little over a year ago, I mostly use that instead along with the 20/1.8 but it is a huge gap.

This is the best D850 thread on the nets. I appreciate my daily dose while I wait patiently.
