For the record, the magenta cast in dark areas was an Adobe issue, not a Nikon issue. Capture nx-d doesn't produce the same problem. It seems Nikon really did work with Adobe to make the raw conversion better.

I won't be paying the early adopter tax, but this thread certainly makes my credit card finger itchy

First of all, great thread topic (and very valuable link resource) from Dj R ... saludos for the effort

Some really nice images on the preceding page; really digging the colors and detail. I am particularly interested in seeing a comparison of a telephoto with a TC extender vs. the same telephoto (no extender) just "cropped", given the mpx.

Have the sneaking suspicion, at lower ISOs, that the D850 will not need an extender and will be a better tool without one.

I was just about to post that as I asked him to make it and he nicely obliged. Unfortunately he sold his D810 so can't get all 3 under one mic.

Got it. Thanks again

Got a chance to play with TC a bit more this am.
All pictures were imported into PS for cropping and conversion to jpg and size reduction to the same size. No other adjustment was done.

1 by Suteetat S, on Flickr
500/4e @f4 cropped, ISO was 4000 which is a major benefit over pictures with TC. All was taken at 7 am ish so light was not that great.

2 by Suteetat S, on Flickr
500/4e with TC14e iii, cropped, f5.6, iso 1000,

3 by Suteetat S, on Flickr
No cropping, just size reduction. f8, iso 1000, shutter speed was really low though, 1/25 but the owl was quite stationary. Dof was also significantly less but I think even the detail of the wood is quite a bit worse as well. I think TC14e iii is quite reasonable but I would try to go without TC if possible. Hmmm... may be I should have bought 600/4e instead of 500/4e

Thanks for posting the nice owl shots. The 2xTC shot is front focused so not good for a comparison. Even though the DOF does decrease, I don't think that is the full reason for the missed focus. The near parts of the tree trunk in the 2xTC shot is nicely in focus whereas the other shots with more DOF don't have it in focus when the owl is in focus. I think if you had nailed the owl in focus like the other two shots it would hold up but still maybe give no benefit unless printing it large.

Oh and I wouldn't worry about a 600E because they are a lot more cumbersome and heavy to shoot with. I have a 600/4 and most outings even when I need lots of focal length I often wish for the much smaller and lighter 500/4.

Yes, I forgot to mention. I did go through calibration with AF fine tune for 500/4e FL and 500/4e FL with TC14. With auto fine tune, I could not calibrate TC20 with my 500/4e FL. I kept getting AF fine tune failed message. OUt of about 20 attempts, I tried, I got +1 and +11, the rest all failed.
No problem without TC and TC14 though. It was +8 and +5, I think. I really wish Nikon would allow touch screen or shutter release rather than 2 buttons and ok button process and it is almost impossible to keep the camera absolutely still on tripod especially with long tele and TC.

shot a wedding today
I previously shot with a pair of d750 or a d750/d810 combo
it was def exciting to have the d850

the sound of the shutter is just sublime, I know that sounds like a stupid thing to remark about, but I love it!
there are some new features that are great, for sure.
but just the overall color/tone/feel is what strikes me.

I use LR exclusively. I don't even have PS.
So these are JPG.
Very simple edits.

All using available light and hh obviously.
Glass 28 1.4, 85 1.4, one of these from 70-200e

Tried to post a decent variety of images for you to see, but I'm tired, so this is all for now!

The bokeh from the 28 is just amazing on the d850. Now I realize (fully) why Nikon is recreating their lineup with the E-FL line.

Good night, my nikkor friends.

Thanks for doing this

The 2x Extender (if not front-focused) may still have the advantage.

Maybe you should report this to Nikon, since D850 is in it's neonatal stage... they would surely come out with some solution....soon.

Thanks for posting those nice images.

You have to set the clock in camera and time zone for that feature to work.

I love 85 too
I love the 70-200, but I have not really used it on the new body yet, just a couple shots.
the thing about the 70-200 is... it's great at 85, and also 135 and 200!
really sharp and just flat out great at everything.

This one also have best color of any Nikon body introduce past few years IMO.

I just finished reading a Chinese review of D850. Very technical one. The AF is the exact same performance as D5 with 70-200E. (For other glass, D5 might have advantage for higher battery power) and at 400lux light condition, it beat A9, 1DXII in term of AF speed just as D5 did. Until 100lux and
below, A9 and 1dxII pull up. It get more keeper rate than D5 tracking moving subject but reviewer think that because of slower frame/s compare to D5.

The sensor is absolutely the best out of all FF offfers. And it is also have better dynamic range than all miniMF sensor. Low light only behind D5,A9,1dxII slightly. I expect this one will be a new DXO sensor king for sure. (Not that really matter)

The review title: only it can beat itself (means Nikon is the best)

Keep in mind, the review is from largest rental company in China that rent all product like Canon and Sony. There is no bias.

The con are:

Heavy (not really)
Miss updated super wide angle (fully agree)
Manual is not as good as Canon(but reviewer admit he is canon user)
Expensive(about $4500 in China right now, big mark up from retailer)
Video is lacking compare Canon and Sony
Made in Thailand (argurable)
No CF card support (argurable)
