p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Are you ready for the Canon 5DS R MARK II?

Canonrumors has a new rumor (CR2) on a 60MP Canon 5DS R Mark II for 2018...
  1. Working prototypes are currently being tested.
  2. The “5DS” series will be amalgamated into a single camera.
  3. No low pass filter.
  4. All new 60.1mp image sensor.
  5. A new type of low megapixel mode.
  6. 4K video (video features will be basic)
  7. Identical body to the EOS 5D Mark IV.
  8. Focus peaking present, may appear first on another DSLR.
  9. Expect all the other features such as DPAF, Wifi, Touchscreen and GPS.

Exciting?

You bet. Very curious about the frame rate and buffer.

It's very nice that Canon/Nikon are both adding focus peeking to their new DSLRs!

Passed on the 5D IV in anticipating this camera.

Throw in a 50mm L 1.4 IS to support that resolution and it's a deal!

Rather than making the camera identical to the 5Div, I would really like to see it have at least a flippy screen. A camera which will likely be used mainly by landscape and studio photographers would create less neck and back pain if it possessed a flip out and up and down screen, or even better, a fully rotational one.

I would also like to see Canon figuring out a way to introduce cross points to the dual pixel focusing, at least in a collection of spots arrayed about the focusing area. My toy camera, the M5, is surprisingly effective focusing even a 500/4 with 2x but there are times when most lines are horizontal it does get a bit slow focusing. An array of cross points would have fixed the problem.

Yes, if it comes in a small mirrorless package and not in DSLR form.

..after spending quite some effort to avoid easily replacing the matt focusing screen with dedicated screens for better manual focusing as seen in the 5D MkIII.

The minor MP boost from my 5DsR works out to be only 10% linear resolution increase which is negligible & not worth the upgrade on its own IMHO. Now if Canon includes the improvements from the 5DIV and then some then yes however depending on review & user reporting back I would likely wait until the the camera has been out at least a year allowing for bugs, if any, to be worked out and the first discounting to start up. My last two cameras came from Canon Referb.

I bet the specification will be equal or better than Nikon D850
8K time lapse, 4K recording without C-Log (hopefully upgradeable like 5D IV)
I wouldn't mind having a Vari-angle Touch screen, 3.2-inch LCD or bigger; imaging ease of capturing spider, nature scenaries, and those beautiful low angle shots...
Let's release it this year! or at CES 2018!

Wait, does this suggest it's literally a 5D4 with a bigger sensor? Same AF and all that? Whoa.

Let's hope the sensor is based on their one modern sensor (5D IV) instead of old technology (like the 6D II)

I'm not sure I would upgrade either for the extra 10 MP alone, but whether it is negligible or not depends on what one shoots and also style of shooting. I certainly would not mind the extra cropping ability in bird photography.

The only thing interesting to me in those specs is the ambiguous "A new type of low MP mode". Does that mean a mode that will give a crop with increase in FPS like Nikon has been doing for years (although not on D850)?

10 extra MPs is very minimal when already at 50MPs. They only gave the 5D4 7FPS....I only see them giving this 6FPS.

If it is a 5D4 body then it won't have an articulating screen, it won't have any upgraded card slots but it will share the same grip like the 5DS/R did with the 5D3. Doing this makes sense for Canon to save costs as they don't have to make entire new parts for the majority of the camera's build.

Assuming they don't pull a 6D2 and they give this new sensor the new DR and all the small updates that have come to the 5D4, then I see this as a nice update but nothing to get to excited about.

Sure, but I'd need to see speedier write to card and improved noise performance.
Better yet, for situations where I'd like to have a 5Dsr, the used price should drop.

The only way it will write faster is if it's upgraded to CFast or better yet, however not likely, the new CFexpress.

BTW, CFexpress replaces and combines both CFast & XQD into XQD's form factor. I expect that it will be around a long time. BTW, XQD will be forward compatible with CFexpress however at XQD's original performance and CFast will not be compatible.

Same here. Still using 5Dm2 as my only full frame.
I do hope that they include a flippy screen.

Given the amount of pixels, is there really a need for medium format digital cameras?
