p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Summer Salvage: Part 2 - Rebuilding the nest

In Part 1 I showed the nest the female Eastern kingbird was constructing (and lost) the day I discovered it.

The following day, there was no sign she planned to rebuild at that site. However, on the following morning, she started back up again! Much to my surprise (and delight), it seemed both she and I were going to have a second chance.

Over the next couple days, she built a cozy little nest. She did all the nest building. Her mate would fly and perch, standing guard close to her as she gathered materials: grasses, cattail fuzz, etc. I later read that nest-building activities are usually done in the morning and that was the case here too. All in all, it was a fascinating process to observe and an absolute treat to be able to photograph!

I realized this was going to be my spot for awhile, so I mounted the 1D IV, 500 II and 1.4 III on the tripod for these.

1. This little bit of material for the foundation was the result of a dozen or more flights.

2. It sure doesn't look like much--yet.

3. There was nothing haphazard about the operation; she placed each element right where she wanted it.

4. Though I spent some time trying to acclimate the pair to my presence, it seemed there were times the shutter noise caught her attention.

5. More and more nest material gathered with each flight.

6. After every few 'loads' she would cup the nest with her chest to shape it just so.

7. Bringing in the cattail fuzz.

8. I realized she was flying by feel, not by sight.

10. Another "hard press".

11. Thanks to digital for capturing a moment I didn't see with my bare eye!

12. Making excellent progress.

14. And...one more trip.

Interesting set of photos. It still looks a bit precarious. I hope this ends well.

Thanks Morris. The camera captured far more than I saw, thankfully!

Thank you Dave. From what I have read, this is a pretty typical nest site for a kingbird. That said, I do agree with you!

Thanks Herb. I'm pretty fond of the kingbirds myself (they've given me some great photo-ops the last few years).
