When on vacation I had dirt on my pics....I have gotten the dirt off but now have something i see thru the viewfinder....if it isn't affected by focus or zoom, what does that rule out? Not the lens either as same thing on a different lens (but if it had been the lens I would have expected it to move with zoom). i don't see anything on the sensor. 1D MKiii.....anything I can rule out based on those clues would be helpful....first post so I hope I am in the correct spot.....

Thanks

It could be in the prism housing or on the mirror.

Mirror is the first suspect, but be very careful and avoid cleaning it, have it professionally cleaned. The bottom if the focus screen is also suspect.

Finally, the eyepiece could be smudged, but that is difficult to do.

You can rule out sensor and lens based on your information, remove the lens and look carefully at the mirror. Also try to look up at the focus screen and the eyepiece.

This leaves the internals of the viewfinder assy, but unless you opened them up, that seems unlikely.

Probably a piece of dust on the focusing screen.
