Wow, it has been awhile and I'm traveling at the moment and away from my "toys". One thing was to use the duotone baseline, Warm Grey 11, in the CC presets (this is the starting point Brooks Jensen - Lensworks - points out in discussions of their print process), a second I believe was to use a Gaussian blur, overlay or soft light blend mode, opacity of ?, to add contrast and smooth, and a third Tony Kuyper's TK Rapid Mask (version 2?) to target midtones and apply levels to mask to suit.
Duotone requires grayscale and 8-bit mode so it, my belief anyway, takes many conversion nuances out of the equation. The ink curves can be tweaked but I normally don't dabble in that. Change mode to RGB after for further processing.
Likely more but I cannot recall exactly at the moment.
