reference for: "The a version of EN-EL15 is said to work better in the cold" please?
until there is corroborating evidence from a reliable source you "can't get there from here".
You're correct this is not clear.
B&H product overview for EN-EL15 says "The 1900mAh Nikon EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion Battery is a rechargeable battery for the Nikon D500, D600, D610, D7000, D7100, D750, D800, D800E, D810 and the Nikon 1 V1 cameras. Lithium-ion batteries will not suffer from the adverse memory effects that are normally associated with other battery types."
and for the EN-EL15a it says "Power select Nikon DSLRs with this EN-EL15a Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery, which serves as a spare or replacement for the one provided with the camera. It is designed to offer long life and consistent power, even when you're shooting in cold conditions, and can be charged or discharged at any time without developing memory effects. The battery is compatible with the MH-25a charger."
I made the assumption that the differences in the text to indicate differences between the products, however of course I have no long-term side by side test data. It could be simply that B&H photo made new text and didn't intend the differences to reflect different battery performances.
It is also possible that the EN-EL15a is simply a different code to make it clear that if you buy this it won't be a Li-Ion-01 type (which has issues providing sufficient power to the D500) or one that is affected by one of the recalls of the EN-EL15 some years ago. But there can be differences we don't know about when Nikon doesn't exactly say it clearly.
