There is one thread in the General Gear section about that article. Roger commented that the part for that 600II was $200 plus 3hrs of labour so the renter got off fairly easy for damaging a $12K lens.

I'd be concerned about the bonding cement for the lens groups. I read that it can be affected by the very strong light. It may turn dark or elements separate at some future time. I also wonder if the lubes are damaged or slightly decomposed.

magnifying full sun through the front element is never a good idea Better camp fire starters out there
That said, shit happens. I didnt even think about the aperture blades - just was generally nervous of intensifying that much direct light using a telephoto.

The eclipse didn't do it.

The sun did.

The sun will do it any day, if you point your 600mm lens at it long enough.

I just hope the renter didn't put his eye to the VF!

It never occurred to me that the required rental insurance wouldn't cover any damage caused by the sun! I agree with the "negligence" clause. I just wonder how many renters understood that exclusion.

I would issue a blanket ban on all supertele rentals around time of solar eclipse. To the guy that damaged the 600II "your village is on the phone and is demanding its idiot back"
