Heheheh...I thought the shots are OK... Is my second outing of the lens. Still trying to figure out what and how I should shoot with a lens that is sharp at f1.8 all the way.

Here is a shot shot at last night evening around 8:30pm. F2.5 ISO 4000. Is sharp all across. Not just that since the lens is so sharp, I didn't need to reapply more sharpening in CS5 after running the file through some aggressive NR.

Thanks....

SiMuMe,

Doubt it we are the only two since the lens is popular. I do fear that maybe many people have AF issues with it. So far, my copy's AF performance is 98% spot on and consistent too. I don't need to shoot a whole bunch of shots to get one shot in focus.

Thanks for starting this thread. Those are very impressive examples on all fronts. I've been drooling over this lens but it's quite the chunck of change for me. I need to just do it.

In the beginning I was not sure if I would like the lens since the focal length isn't as long. Once I got it and the AF is working correctly and very consistent throughout 98% of the time, I am really loving this lens. I could get some long distance shot at infinity at F1.8 and it has enough sharpness and DOF. Is just mind blowing.

If I were you, I would try to get one where you can return or exchange it..in case you have focusing issues. My copy is actually a refurbished unit...not sure if it was refurbished by a Sigma approved third party or Sigma itself. My copy works very beautifully. I am even thinking about selling my Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 OS.

Testing out my Hoya Pro1 D CPL with the Sigma lens while waiting for my 6 stops ND coming from China. Planning to do some long exposure shots with the Sigma...

I got lazy and just ran through these shots in SilverEfx2.

My copy is not nearly as sharp as any of these. I am using with a D500 and bought it used off of here. I have tried the AF fine tune on my camera but seems inconsistent when focusing. Any thoughts on what I can do? Should I send it in to Sigma?

Well, my copy was a refurbished unit...and bought from Beachcamera. However, neither Beachcamera or Sigma acknowledged if they have refurbished the lens....... I don't really care. The lens is sharp wide open and I only needed +12 to correct the front focusing issue under all focal length. No dock is needed.

Well, there are reports that the Sigma has focusing issues on the D500 when using the off center AF points. If I were you, this is how I would focus adjust the lens. I thought D500 does it for you automatically Try this. You should create a reference shot using LiveView AF since LiveView AF is generally more accurate. Also, pay close attention to the focusing scale and where the vertical bar/mark positions. I would pick 6ft since that's generally your shooting distance with this lens. So, use LiveView AF to shoot a subject at 6ft distance. Pick something like a huge box with big text on it. Pay attention to the distance scale and where the vertical mark positions (ie...behind the 6 or in between the 6 and ft, or behind ft).

Because....now, when you switch to the viewfinder AF, you are HOPING the distance scale focusing position is the same place when you were using the LiveView AF. If not, the position could be in front of the 6. Then, the lens is front focusing. It could be behind "ft." Then, it is back focusing. See, you don't need to do test shots to determine if the lens is front focusing or back focusing. Just look at the focus distance scale on the lens itself. Just compare the AF distance scale position between LiveView AF and the normal viewfinder AF. If it is front focusing, you increase your AF fine tune value to +, until the focusing distance scale position matches to the LiveView AF distance position. The AF distance scale on the lens should be positioned at the same distance marked by the distance number under BOTH LiveView AF AND normal viewfinder AF. That's your goal.

You have to do that under all the focal length. You eventually find a common AF tune value that would work on all the focal length. I believe my copy would still front focus a bit under 20mm and 18mm only when the shooting distance is under 1ft....but I rarely shoot this close under 20mm and 18mm. The front focusing is very minor. You should start with using the center AF point. Then, to the side AF points. You should test it just above 1ft and under 2ft. Then, 6ft. And infinity. For testing infinity, I would use something like a house across the street.

You should only send it to sigma if the lens or your D500 can only produce sharp photos wide open using the center point. And front focusing on the side AF points. The USB dock can't fix this and won't allow you to fine tune how your lens would focus depending on which AF points you are using....Is a used lens and Sigma will charge you. I believe the base cost is $250. However, you can have a Sigma authorized third party technician to fix it for you. I think they charge less....ask around....

With D5500. I don't usually close the aperture down as it is just as good wide open but there was a whiff of wind, plus with such close focusing ability I wanted some DOF.
