Yeah, and those diaphragm blades are probably made from titanium or some other exotic, light-weight and heat-resistant metal.

Somebody out there is paying for the 600mm. User error, not accident. Not covered by insurance. Says Roger. Ouch.

I feel sort of sorry for the person who properly used a (drop-in) filter to protect the camera, but still ended up with a melted iris mechanism. It's really annoying to do the right thing, but not do it right enough...

Using a drop-in filter for a solar eclipse is not the right thing to do. There's ample information out there (and it's even mentioned in a few threads here) stating the only safe way to photograph the sun is with a filter in front of all lens elements. Someone probably didn't want to pay more for a larger filter.

Well, actually paying for the repair. The part was about $200 and about 3 hours of repair work. Way less than the cost of the lens.
