Looks like Nikon wants us to upgrade to the newest (and coincidentally, most expensive) lenses for the D850:

http://www.dslrbodies.com/cameras/the-d850-blog/the-best-lenses-for-the.html

I'm a little surprised at some of the lenses that Thom Hogan and Nikon don't deem fit for the new camera, like the AF-S 70-200mm f4G VR... or the AF-S 24-120mm f4G VR that DxO Mark shows to be sharper than the new 24-70mm f2.8E VR, particularly at the wide end?

Personally, I'd listen to Thom's experienced based knowledge before I'd consider DxO benchmark tests that reduce lens tests to a simple score(s). But be very careful...you need to read Thom's musings in their entirety. When it comes to the 70-200, from what I've read he simply says the E model is so superior to the G model OVERALL, there's not much to discuss. As far as the 24-120G 'kit lens' is concerned, no agument from me that it doesn't belong in the "best of the best" list of lenses for the mighty D850. Its just not that great a lens...which helps to explain why so many are available for cheap on this sites B&S forum.

"Here we are with the increased resolution of the D850 and Nikon hasn't provided the same type of list yet."

So a total clickbait non-article then. Inclusion of the 58mm made me close the tab.

I've never liked these lists of 'suitable' lenses. Every lens, regardless of it's quality, will be the same or better on the D850 than a lower resolution camera, all else being equal. Further, if you want the best out of any camera at any resolution, you need the best glass and the best technique. Certainly there is an attraction to putting the best glass on something like a D850, but the same is true regardless of the camera if the goal is maximum image quality. So just buy what works for you, and rest assured you will still be further ahead if you have a D850.

As for the 70-200FL, that lens is simply stunning, and I am sure it will perfect for getting the most out of the D850.

Nikon put out a waiver stating if you use anything but E lenses on the d850, you could risk damage to the BSI sensor

Are you joking or confused? - I can't tell. That is absolutely not the case.

I was referring to the f4 version... which Thom says is also no longer suitable... yet it is clearly superior to a few of the lenses that are deemed acceptable.

Maybe Thom tested it on a tripod and left the VR on...

We had all of this rubbish with the D800 iirc. Marketing BS to increase sales.

Ah, yes...my bad. I also noticed he hasn't mention the 70-200f4...not sure if that was on purpose or just an oversight. I have to assume it was not an oversight, if only because he clearly indicates his extreme criticality on the whole issue. Too bad if that's the case though, since I own the f4 version myself!

I heard that mounting anything but E lenses would cause impact damage.

These lists are just guidelines IMO. To remind you what's out there, and relative to other Nikon offerings, what seems to be superior. Obviously no third party here...

He did mention in his article that he would start evaluating some of the Sigma lenses since they have upped their game.

The NR copy and paste doesn't have all of Thom's discussion. Their article is clickbait. His on his own site not so much.

I think lot of folks are bit too harsh on Thom. First among bloggers he is probably the oldest one out there who were blogging and reviewing Nikon gear before even gear reviews became money making machine. I much prefer his no nonsense style (excuse all the whining about Nikon) to many other bloggers.

Second. If you take the article in context all he is trying to do is identify lenses which could possibly take "full" advantage of 45M sensor based on his personal experience. That doesn't mean those lenses are bad, it just means from his prospective they may not be the best lenses for D850's resolution power. And he is putting it out there more as starting point since Nikon has not yet published recommended lenses list like they did for D800

I think Thom is one of the more thoughtful commentators out there. While what he writes doesn't always end up to be true, it is well reasoned and backed up with stats as much as possible. My camera gear strategy over the past ~10 years has been to put together the best set of lenses possible that match my style and subjects. I tweak it every now & then. The lens omission I'm most curious about is the Nikon 70-200mm f4 VR. All the reviews I've seen rated this lens highly.

If you can't provide a credible source for this kind of BS claim, then this post is trolling IMO.

I've never been one to include glass as part of a body upgrade. If I did, a D850 would cost me:

D850 - $3300
14-24 f/2.8 - $1900
24-70 f/2.8E - $2400
70-200 f/2.8E - $2800
300 f/4E - $2000
...or 300 f/2.8E - $5400

That's in the range of $12,000 - $15,000. I'm thinking my wife would say no (especially since we just spent that much to replace our failed HVAC system - not to mention we are still recovering from what we paid for our wedding andhoneymoon earlier this year, and trips for recent family illnesses.)

I'm not considering the 200 f/2 or 400 f/2.8E (regardless how much I would love them) because I don't have them now and they would add another $18,000 to the tab.

Some of my glass could use an upgrade for sure - like my 70-200 f/2.8 (version 1) but I somehow manage to get acceptable photos using the glass I have anyways. It was mentioned in another thread that the glass will last a good 20 years or more, but we want to upgrade when a new body comes out. I guess that works for Nikon and those with deep pockets, but not for me!
