p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lovely Laikipia- Northern Kenya trip highlights. | |
A small collection from a recent trip to the Laikipia region in Northern Kenya............far away from the madding crowds of the Mara
Carried to safety
A lioness carries one of her two 4 week old cubs away from a herd of buffalo that caught scent of her densite, acting quickly she grabbed the noisier female first and then came back for her son.
A tense scene played out and it was touch and go if she could come back in time to save the male before an inquisitive bull buffalo started to move in closer, luck was on her side and she managed to move both in time and then subsequently relocated them even further away in a second move.
In all my 35 years of visiting Africa, this was only the third time I have had the special privilege to witness a lioness carrying her young, what a day!!

Ele generational procession.
Leading the procession we have the bull, then an adult female and her older daughter and young mischievous son complete with trunk in the air! Above the bull are a trio of squabbling Anteater Chat. This gives a good indication as to the size of a mature bull to a mature female, a massive difference! It took over an hour and a lot of patience to capture all four progressively sized with clear separation and to a wonderful late afternoon sky, what a joy to witness!

Martha...........hold still !!
It was the breeding season after all.
On this day I counted a "tower" of 72 Giraffe with the males all having but one thing on their mind.

The widow maker
Under a rising full moon, this bull buffalo had horns much wider than normal, closer to 4 1/2 feet than the usual 3 ft. An impressive boss rack for sure!

Backs to the wall
Sensing my presence, but with poor eyesight, this mother and baby White Rhino go into a classic "backs to the wall" defensive stance.

Lioness sunrise
A lioness sits and contemplates another beautiful sunrise.
With no one around and getting the nod from my guide, I slowly snuck out and captured this pair whilst lying underneath my vehicle.
