Eclipse: I've got pix…pix…

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Eclipse: I've got pix…pix…

Was able to shoot the eclipse. We only had about 63% occlusion, but it was fascinating. I've never shot an eclipse before so undoubtedly made mistakes.

I used a 1Dx with a 100-400 and an intervalometer set to 30'. In a bit over 2 hours, there are LOTS of images. So what do I do with them?

Because the image of the sun moves relative to the camera's sensor ( ) and much further than the width of the sensor, I had to keep shifting the aim point to keep up with the travel. Since I didn't have a tracking tool such as used with telescopes, the image bounces all over the frame.

My goal is to get that classic sequence (maybe 8 - 12 images) which illustrates the progression of the shadow across the sun. My first couple of attempts haven't worked well. I tried opening several images as layers in Ps, but they quite logically block those below. I tried selecting by color, cutting the sun out and placing them in a composite image. Problem is cutting them out also cuts out the black of the shadow. (Also haven't gotten clean edges.) Maybe a black base layer with the moon progression in layers above it? Clearly, I have to get the selected images in the right sequence and trajectory and somehow merge them.

Seriously, I know I wasn't the only one there snapping away. (104°F, 30% relative humidity So how are you approaching this image?

Appreciate input from someone more skilled than I am.

Robert

I haven't tried it yet, but have the shots to work with. My plan was to use a black background and then arrange the images as layers above it, using the "lighten" blend mode such that only the portions of the top image that are lighter than those behind it will show through.

Lightspeed send me a superb clip on a straight forward way to do it using layer masks.

Check Kloskowski on youtube. (Can't seem to embed the link properly.)

Love how FM folks help out!

I'm in the same boat - hundreds of photos, but have not yet found a good way to align them.

The link seems broken - could you repost it?

Thanks!

Got it this time. Here it is. Great. My only challenge is that the shots aren't centered in the frame.

Thanks for all the help. Using the videos, I not only put together a passable sequence (will be front page of our small town paper), but learned a lot about blending - a topic that has bedeviled me forever.

I made things much harder on myself because I had the 100-400 at full extension. This required me to move the focus point and refocus manually. I guess I should have guessed the full travel of the sun and gone to a wider FOV.

Not the greatest images, but I like them if for no other reason than I really advanced my PP skills. (And eclipses are really kool! )
