"What was interesting is that a “professional EOS-1” is said to be starting in-the-field testing in 2018."

What do you need, crave and want? A Dx, Ds or C? What specs do you expect for reaching for your wallet in the year that's up next ? ? ?

1DX's are already pushing limits. I guess the old revised AF system, resolution, burst rate, buffer, DR, and media will all be addressed. Those along with connectivity upgrades and materials in relation to shutter durability will all be likely upgrades.

For me I'd like to see a mirrorless version of 1 series, but using EF mount:
Buffer on 1DXII is already amazing, it can shoot 900+ shots before buffer fills up, well beyond the spec.

Specs:

30-36MP stacked sensor with BSI, 14EV+
16-20fps
New AF covering 80%+ of VF, -4EV, 200+ AF points, 99+ selectable,
3.9MP (1440 x 900) 80-100Hz refresh EVF,
Full electronic sensor, totally silent shooting
4K from 6K capture no line skipping or binning,
4K @ 60, 50, 48, 30. 25 24p
1920x1080p @ 120p (either multiples of 30p or 24p
Efficient codecs,
Full swivel screen
Dual CFast or XQD
Weight 1.2kg max

I doubt there will be a new 1D series body before early 2020.

Canon has released it's flagship 1- Series body the year of the summer Olympics. Winter olympics is in 2018 along with the FIFA world cup. My guess is that a new 1-Series will appear in 2020 and unlikely in 2018.

Just sayin.....

As long as it includes the 600DO kit lens then not much else matters....

But I also don't believe you will see a new 1 series until the Summer Olympic year. However, if it isn't a 1DX3 and is instead something different like revival of DS line (high MP) or a Cinema then it could come at any time.

A9 should have Canon and Nikon shitting bricks. While it's far from perfect and has rough edges, it's is amazing in many areas. There are so many areas where mirrorless can have an advantage it's going to be the norm. I'd like to see Canon leverage the benefits of mirrorless while keeping their excellent ergonomics and bigger battery. I'm not worried by size of the 1DX(II), but I'd like to see it lose a fair bit of weight. Also last thing I want to see is a another pathetic res bump, Anything less than 30MP would be a deal breaker, even 24MP wouldn't entice me not in a probably 2019/20 camera. 20MP of the 1DXII was main reason I didn't upgrade 1DX, the 4K wasn't anywhere near enough nor was the extra DR, given I'd usually be at ISO 400+ where DR improvements are small to none.

Canon announced that they were developing a 120 MP FF camera two years ago. It is likely that it will appear any year now. The three possible camera types I can think of, are a revival of a 1D style high res camera, the successor of the 5DS, or a new mirrorless camera. The least surprising of those would be a 1D style camera IMO.

Medium format.

Or, a secondary sensor that is "only" 10MP full frame, when you want those noise free low light shots that don't require high resolution. Not sure how all that would work, but it would be really cool!

Rumor says testing new 1D series at events in 2018, it may be the engineering samples of 1DX mark III (FF) or 1D V (APS-H)

There is a lot of testing that goes on, particularly if there are major new features or technology. Canon is certainly looking at Mirrorless, but I'd doubt that we would see it in the 1 series slot unless they released a companion 1Dm camera and kept the 1Dx II alongside it.

To go much faster you'll need mirrorless or a pellicle mirror. Considering the high iso performance of sensors, I'd like to see a pellicle mirror. A high MP to compete with the new medium format and higher MP offerings probably make the most sense.

Yep, if Sony had put the A9 internals in a larger body I would have pre-ordered. The 2.8 zooms are there, the 100-400 GM is there. For my kit all I would need is a 300/2.8.

I like my current gear but Canon has fallen behind on camera bodies. An A9mk2 in a larger body with a global shutter and I'm switching outright. Two big if's to be sure but I have little confidence that Canon is going to come close to the A9 even in 2020.

10 years ago the 1d3 was at 10mb, the 1dx2 is at 20mb so I wouldn't bet a huge jump in mb. More incremental improvements as usual, improving DR and high ISO has to be a priority. More AF points, ok but I'm still not using iTR. Better remote capabilities with built in wifi and camranger like functionality. Bigger & brighter screen would nice, tilting would be nicer.

I think in next 12 months you'll see the A9 mixed in with the traditional Canon gear on sporting events which should get Canon's attention. An A9 + 70-200 is about 1.5 lbs less than 1D equivalent, that's a benefit. At the end of the day it's just another tool to use it doesn't seem that far off anymore that Sony is on it's way to being on the sidelines.
