I don't know if it will work and even if it dies it could bring other issues in but have you tried shooting Raw+Jpeg where the jpeg goes to the other card and is smaller than full size ?

if you set the camera to use the jpeg card as the image review card it may speed things up .

Can you do that? Is there a CFn you can point to for controlling this?
Thanks

I don't have the 5Dsr but I'm pretty sure its a setting on my 5D3.

cant say it will change the speed of playback but its worth a try .

the big hit could be in buffer . i pressume the 5Dsr is the same as the 5D3 with its bad RAW+Jpeg buffer .

at the end of the day your dealing with a lot of pixels that need processing to display the embedded jpeg . even when you shoot just raw the camera has to generate a jpeg for preview on screen and since the move to higher res rear screens (around the time of the 1D3 / 40D i think) these have been full res jpegs with pretty high compression

Just got a 5DSr. Here's how I sped it up. Record separately so that RAW hits CF card and Small-Fine Jpegs hit SD card. Also set image playback to SD. You won't get the same level of detail when 100% zoomed on the back of the screen on these small JPEGs, but now it's like I remember my 5D iii to be.

Every technical problem discussed on these Gear Forums (which belongs here) is a first world problem.

There might be some in-camera features and settings that are adding an unnecessary processing burden and so delay the preview. For example, you might try disabling in-camera lens aberration corrections (several features, all requiring processing), GPS, picture styles, dust delete data, highlight tone priority, cropping, dual pixel raw (makes bigger files, but I don't know that it's on the 5dsr) and noise reduction. Most of these are "necessary" if you don't do raw processing, but unnecessary if you are going to do all in the computer anyway.

My 5DsR takes about 1.5 seconds from shutter to preview for a single large fine jpeg on a "32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 300 MB/sec UHS II SD card". About the same for a "32GB Transcend 800X UDMA7 120 MB/sec CF"

Is the 1.5 seconds the time you are concerned about? Or is it the eternity that happens when you've shot a burst that fills the buffer and you drink a cup of coffee while it clears?

Edited to add a quicky. I'm sure someone's done this much more systematically, but I was curious with my specific cards what the times were. I think there are faster cards put there but the SD one is my choice among mine. Fastest frame rate doesn't change much.

With just L jpeg, high speed shooting goes >30 sec with simultaneous writing on both cards.
If I use raw + L jpeg, and stop shooting when the frame rate slows, I get ~3 sec of frames (~ 15 or so) frames and then wait until the buffer clears (the LED goes out) the CF card takes 22 sec after stopping shooting and the SD card takes 12 sec to write those 16 images.
With just raw, it takes the SD card ~7 sec to finish writing after stopping shooting.

Take out the SD card and close the door. That will set the CF card as the primary. You can set the file type to be written in the set up. Put the SD card in and the CF card will be the one that plays back.

You can use the setup menus to choose which card is used for playback and what quality goes to each card.

The first menu item under the Set-up1 menu (wrench/spanner) is "Record func+card/folder sel."
Under that is Record func. ( (Standard, autoswitch card, Rec. separately, rec. to multiple)"
Set that to rec separately.
The one below it is "Playback" Select the one you want to use for playback/review.
Now go to Shoot 1 menu (Camera icon)
Under" image quality" you can now set card 1 and card 2 to record different quality
