Beautiful shot!

Not solar flares, they are prominences.

Great images posted here for sure! What an awesome experience it was to see! Was located right outside the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in Nebraska, perfect weather too. So here are a few of mine. Like the way the single exposures came out - still working on getting a composite image I like.

Corona - single image at 1/8sec, ISO 200, f/5.8 (telescope mounted)

Prominences (near end of totality) 1/2000th sec, ISO 200, f 5.8 (telescope mounted)

Diamond Ring, forget exact shutter speed, all other parameters as above 2 shots

Here are some from the Mitchell, Oregon area. We were fortunate for clear skies, no smoke, and cool weather.

Interesting article about equipment aftermath and the eclipse.

Great job Dave. All the eclipse elements definitely captured.
You have corona details all the way to the lunar limb. Definitely the hardest pp job ever.
I like the composite with the partials. I should have done this too.
Your shot with the proms and chromosphere is very nice.
Congrats!

Here is a quick shot of the sunset prior to the eclipse. We just finished setting up our tent and having a snack. Fortunately the clouds cleared afterwards for a beautifully starry sky with the milky way bright from horizon to horizon and a couple meteors as well.
The John Day River is in the foreground hidden by brush.

Beautiful place and sunset!
Just looking at this image I can tell your eclipse experience was much better than mine. All I had to look at was my swimming pool in my backyard.

I'll be hitting the road for the next one. Ironically I'll be going back to my hometown for it and already have a spot in mind.

Kathy your images are really good. I really enjoyed looking at all the shared images. Inspires me for the next eclipse.

I have attached my corona shot, a blend of five different exposures. We were in John Day, Oregon.

If you're interested, I put together a GIF of the entire process, with the corona shot in the middle; it's here:

Very nice!
We were at the Priest Hole Rec Area along the John Day River.
How did you make your gif? I'm a gif noob.

+1 @ very nice! You got some serious corona length there.

I checked out your GIF and think that is pretty cool. I had not even thought of doing that and might give it a try myself.

Crazy that you and David were at the same location and didn't know it at the time.

Have any of you guys seen that footage of the kid that nailed the space station fly-by during the eclipse?

Now that is cool stuff.

I saw that yesterday - I love the bit where he realised he totally screwed up his eclipse pics but doesn't really care because he got the ISS and was so overawed by the event.

There are many "how to" videos on YouTube showing how to make an animated GIF using Photoshop. It's a time-intensive chore, but worth it, IMO. If you choose to make one, be sure that you carefully align all the images.

Thanks! I thought maybe the corona might be pretty large, which is why I took those images at 400mm (full frame body), while I took the filtered, partial eclipse photos at 700mm (also full frame body). I wanted to maximize the probability that I would get the whole thing on the frame.

There were hundreds of thousands of eclipse tourists in the area; we had friends close by and didn't know it.

I loved that story of the space station capture!

Yeah, my inclination was to use 840mm focal length, but then everyone on CloudyNights said 600mm was maybe too long for the corona. Good choice!
Definitely want to play with a GIF.
I think I've tried 20 ways to pp my corona and it's never the same twice. At some point I need to stop. It turned out much better than I ever expected.

Here's my contribution. We only got about 80% coverage. Since I figured everyone else would be getting photos of the eclipse itself, I'd capture the effects of it, particularly how dark it would get at a constant exposure. It really makes you appreciate how much your eyes and brain compensate when there's less light because during the whole event, it didn't see that much darker than a slightly cloudy day.

1802 frames taken every 6 seconds from 10:05am until 1:05pm (15 minutes before the start and after the end of the eclipse). Three hours compressed into 1 minute. Taken with my 6D and Sigma 15mm fisheye.

This is my first timelapse, so I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.
