12-24 for me, even though I find the lens quite finicky in manual focus (tiny movement on the ring means everything in focus vs most out of focus). I already got Loxia 21, ZM25 and ZM35 so those focal ranges are covered. I'll be selling my CV12 and CV15, also possibly getting the Laowa 15 for astro if it's good, otherwise the Samyang 14/2.8 will be used.

The 16-35 looks to be a real winner.

Easy use of filters, good flare control and sharp wide open. This will make it great walk around and landscape lens.

12-14 is pretty specialized.

It's already a wideangle lens and still goes to 24mm, I don't see how that makes it MORE of a specialty lens than the 16-35mm, lol.

If anything I'd be prefer for my wideangle lens to go wider than for it to be longer as there are other lenses that can handle 35mm.

If your objective is to have a collection of lenses where you maximise your ability to take a given shot using one of your lenses, that is definitely a valid point of view. I can see that someone like Guy, for example, might be best served with this approach - he'll take his kit with him to a paid job and he needs to be able to take the required shots. So what he needs above all else is to have a lens in the bag that can do the job, and having to take a bit of time to swap lenses is of minimal importance.

But for some of us, it doesn't work like that. I want to be able to walk about with the camera and lens and take pictures as I feel like it. Swapping lenses turns it from an enjoyable activity into a chore. What I found when I had the Sigma 12-24 is that I would very often quickly want to swap back to something that covers longer than 24mm, so whenever I wanted to shoot wider than 24mm I knew I had two lens changes coming up - one to put the 12-24 on the camera, and another to go back to something that covers longer than 24mm. This deterred me from wanting to put the 12-24 onto the camera at all. A 16-35, OTOH, can stay on the camera till I want to shoot longer than 35mm, and that is a really big difference for the pictures that I want to take. The fact that it provides 25-35mm isn't unique among lenses, the unique thing it's giving me is not having to change lenses to access that 25-35mm when I've just taken a picture in the 16-24 range.

p.3 #5 · p.3 #5 · Verdict: 12-24 or 16-35 GM?

Well I think its fair to say for almost all of us the use of a 12mm will be a small percentage of shots that overall you will have that on the body. I think that make some good sense. If we did some kind of collection of 10 different shooters times 1000 images and given out of those 10k shots the use of a 12mm maybe the smallest percent where a 24,35,50 will be much higher. I think that would be a given and switching lenses is a PITA even for me that has to get the shot regardless. I fight dust a lot actually. So i do see the use of a 16-35 over the 12-24 as a more popular choice, not sure i would call the 12-24 specialized though. A TSE lens sure but even though this has 12mm a lot of folks will use 16,18,21,24 probably more. Now I try to speak more in general terms on this one and more on a percentage basis but some folks may have a 12mm glued to there body too. I like the 12-24 because it maybe less used but I have that area covered and than I have my 2 primes the Basis 25 and FE 35mm more to lean on. Maybe more the reason I have the 12-25 because if I had the 16-35 than I would be giving up that 25 Batis and i don't want to do that. I rather have those two really good primes in my most used percentage range. But on the other hand for walk around that 16-35 could make much more sense for some folks. I know kind of a waffling answer here but really its such a diverse area you almost have to waffle on a answer because it varies so much. Trust me I have been thinking about all this too between the two zooms. Im still not sure I'm settled in. My issues is if I sold the 12-24 and Batis 25 than I could buy the 16-35 and put about 500 towards the VC 65mm but than I'm stuck with no 12,14mm.

Yea its a mental debate but I think I'm just going to stay pat and still add the VC 65 as i have half the money right now another 2 weeks ill have the rest. Don't tell my wife.

Took my new 12-24 out for a spin this past weekend. Please try to ignore the blown highlights

I like it...not sure I love it yet.

Well one more thought then

Would you go 12-24 and 24-70 GM with some prime thrown in like 25 or 35

Or 16-35 GM with Loxia 50 and CV 12?

Nice images! Thank you for sharing.

I did notice that while there are a few at 12mm, most are in the 16-18mm range which is where I expect I would be also. That's why I keep thinking 16-35 GM for filters and slightly better flare and sun star.

Tough call as we all agree

I'm of the 12-24 + 24-70/50mm for now.

either way, I consolidate some lenses with either 16-35 or 12-24. I do LOVE my CV 10 and will settle for 12mm as widest. I just didnt like changing 10 + 16-35 so often.

with the 16-35, I would get rid of a 14mm f2.8, that I dont use that often quite frankly.

I'de say that 12-24 gives me more convenience hence going that route, and the filter solution easily swayed me that direction and I'm happy for it.

The only real downfall of the 12-24 is it's not flare friendly. You really need to be careful with it

I have got the CV 10/5.6 and Choppy the 15/4.5 III, WATE 16-18-21/4, Batis 25/2, and the FE 35/2.8.
As I like their output I'll stick with them. I hate to sell my stuff anyway, so don't do it.
I am tempted by the 12-24/4 though, but that can wait.

Beside some primes for specialities like the awesome 50mm Planar 1.4 or 85mm GM I will go the route 16-35mm GM and 24-70mm GM now. The possibility to go with the UWA-Zoom from 24mm-35mm opens for me more versatility before switching to the 24-70GM. If I had a 2nd A7RII body I probably would go 12-24mm and the 24-70mmGM...

Absolutely. It's actually pretty bad with flare.....Worse than I even expected. But that's probably my only complaint.

I hate to admit it (because it shows how weak I am), but I'm still thinking of getting the 16-35 2.8 GM. Because, you know, GAS.

While it's not the best, I've shot with it during sunset, and there wasnt too much to be concerned about. I've seen testing direct into the sun on a bright harsh day, but really, who shoots that way?

I like how you're using 12mm in one shot (and maybe others) more as a shift lens than for the 12mm perspective as such. That's more appealing to me as a use case than the extreme perspective. It can often also be achieved by pointing a slightly longer lens upwards and correcting the perspective on the PC, but it's always a bit of a pain having to judge how much to stretch the image in the other direction after getting the verticals straight. Definitely something to think about. I'm starting to think I'll want both lenses at some point - darn you, Sony, for releasing two really appealing high quality lenses

Think it would flare indoors with stark lighting, or does it take something as fully strong as the sun to induce flare?

I guess it comes down to what focal length and f-stop combination do you need most? For instance, how often do you shoot at 50mm and longer? While the 24-70 GM is anything but perfect at 70mm in the corners at infinity, it still gives you a nice 70mm f2.8 option for portraits/close-ups and other things where a longer FL comes in handy. On the other hand, if you think about doing astrophotography, the 16-35 GM is the way to go.

Depends also on how much weight you want to carry around the second line-up should be considerably lighter and more compact, especially if you're thinking about a 35 1.4 (the Loxia 35 or Batis 25 would be lighter, though).

Stage lighting it's possible if it's exposed in your cross pattern but from backlight I tend to doubt it
