p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking to upgrade from my 30D, to something with video

My 30D has lasted me years, Id like something that does video too, I was thinking about a second hand 60D, but I see they only do 30FPS @ 1080P. Id like something comparable to a video camera quality at least, mine shoots 60fps.. Or is a DSLR @ 30ps good enough? I guess they do 720P @ 60?

So, what are my options, for a body, say under $600?

Canon has an SL2, is there something else?

I only dabble in video so I'm afraid I'm not much help there but did want to give some feedback as it relates to the 30D and SL2. I have only owned 5 different dslr bodies so I'm hardly and expert so for what's worth....The 30d was my favorite body before getting the SL1. They are quite different in terms of build and size. I absolutely loved my 30D. The SL1 is a rock star in my book. I'm very excited about the SL2 as I expect it to be better and will be picking one up likely before the end of the year. I'd say the SL2 needs to make your short list for your stated budget. The 80D would be the next thing I would look at but I don't think they are $600 on the used market yet.

I think SL2 would be fine if you like a brand new smaller size DSLR and newest technology (WIFI / Blutooth / Touch Screen focus), 70D would be in your budget range in buy and sell forum for under $600 (body only).

SL2 is the smallet rebel dslr series in Canon's lineup.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1346737-REG/canon_eos_rebel_sl2_dslr.html

Good price, it is very similar to T7i but in smaller package

70D is of course still a better all around DSLR (XX series), better Pentaprism OVF, better AF system via OVF, better shutter speed 1/8000, better flash sync 1/250, and weather resistant is better too.

70D has DPAF as well, as would the SL2. Very useful if doing video...

Way smaller but just as easy to hold unlike some of the mirrorless models I have checked into. The SL1 is about the size of a small lens like the sigma 17-50 or the Canon 17-40L in terms of how it fits in your bag. It is a great second body in a normal size bag.

Congratulations on getting your money's worth out of the 30d. Most of the people on here have been thru 8-10 newer models since that one came out

If something isnt broke I dont fix it. But always carrying around a video camera, and my 30D with a 70-200 IS 2.8 is too much.

Why am I sure that the 70-200 is Version 1. Most of the members here would have had the Version 2 a day after it was released. Takes much better photos you know.

Your combo is ok to shoot a quick pic of the clogged sink drain to show the guys in the plumbing forum but for real photography....well...

Choose your new camera carefully since you will have to make do with it for the next 15 years....

By the way, to the "most of the members" who read this it is all tongue in cheek but you do have to admit that many of your favorite photos were taken with that old, now completely unacceptable equipment. That $4000 new IDMK2n? OMG, how could that possibly have taken a decent shot. By the way, there is one on B/S right now for $300

To be fair the MKII version of the lens is quite a bit better than the MKI. I was happy with my VS I until I did a side by side comparison. On a high density sensor, the MKII simply renders better detail and better contrast, and it was enough to convince me to shell out $1700 for it.

That is one thing that should be stated here. The 30D has the pixel density of a 6D, so moving to a MUCH higher pixel density sensor could easily start to show the age of a lens, where now a lens provides great lower resolution imagery on the 30D and like cameras like the 6D..

It just depends on the copy of the lens (some are better than others) and what lens we are talking about.

There are currently 17 Canon dslr models still available as new, just go into a shop and try a few, they are all good cameras

The direct update of the 30D would obviously be the 80D, which is quite expensive but an outstanding crop sensor dslr

For under $600 the SL2.
If your budget can stretch.... the 80D.

I noticed the 80D has 1080 60fps... maybe I'll wait for the right deal on one of those. Still researching.

Lovin' the new SL2, coupled with a $150 zoom lens! It is a mini 80D, it has the same AF layout as the 30D, but better tracking and low light acquisition. Nice little camera for $550 USD.

Cropped view

ISO 8000 shot

Cropped view of some shadow recovery, audience in darkness, bright field... No work needed, just use the Brightness/Darkness filter in PS.

The SL2 has 1080 60fps as well, but I would suggest the 80D as a general upgrade from the 30D unless you are weight or cost limited. The 70D was the first crop camera that I thought bettered my 40D and the 80D is better still. A really nice camera IMHO.

80D refurb with kit lens: $799. I didn't see a camera only option but you can always sell the 18-55 for $75 on flea bay if you don't want it.

Another example of low ISO DR on the SL2 (and 80D, and the 80D might be a just a bit better perhaps).

I'm a Canon guy, but if video is important I'd look for other solutions. The Sony A6300, Panasonic G80/85 for example turn in much better video than even the 5D4. These other cameras also have many more video specific features, like focus peaking and zebra stripes, use more efficient codecs. Canon's FHD video is at best mediocre due to deliberate crippling. If you been lucky enough to have a camera with magic lantern firmware, you realise the Canon hardware is very capable, but Canon does not want us to experience it's full capabilities,
