Alright, maybe I'm a noob, but I don't seem to be able to find any user input on the Sigma vs the Nikon.

I desperately need something wide for group shots. I have a 24-70 currently, but most of my shots are at 24, or on my 70-200. Any input on the pluses and minuses of each?

Nikon has both 20/1.8G and 24/1.8G great lenses with prices not that far away from Sigma.I don't see point to bother with Sigma in those focal lengths.

Sigma 35 50 or 135 art would be lenses to get from Sigma.

I still use an AF-S 17-35 f2.8 for group shots, wouldn't want to be limited to a prime.
You'll be stopping down some for DOF so f1.4 or f1.8 glass isn't necessary. YMMV.

Tamron 15-30. Heavier but fantastic lens in that FL. If you want light weight, the Nikon 20 is wonderful.

Our copy of the Sigma 20 was sharp as hell - when it focused properly. Was inconsistent by a WIDE margin on the same subject at same distances seconds apart (single point). It went back. Our 35 ART is a LITTLE inconsistent sometimes by a small amount, but it's (so far) not a big enough issue. We stopped looking at ART lens after those two.

If get good copy that plays well with your body(ies) - great lens (the S20), but ensure you have a good return policy and test well.

The Nikon versions are lighter and more compact, the Sigmas are sharper. I have the Nikon 20mm f1.8G and was going to sell and buy the Sigma, but since then Sigma has a 14mm f1.8. I'll eventually buy one of those, for use shooting night skies. The Nikon 20mm f1.8G is actually pretty good so I'm not in a big rush.

Seems like there's a lot of talk of MTF curves and sharpness, but no much discussion of the character of lenses... The Nikon 24 seems slightly older, but I'm just worried the Sigma might be too sharp? (I can't believe I actually said that...)

Also, still not sure about 20 vs 24. Not sure I want the extra distortion involved...

I have the 20 and 24 Art and also the Nikon 20/1.8G. The 20G is excellent in terms of size/weight and IQ but I do feel in terms of IQ particularly for landscapes the Art series are superb. I have mentioned in other threads you do need to choose carefully the Art series as there can be inconsistency issues, but once sorted out the lenses are excellent. Also with the 20 and 24 Art you do need to experiment with different AF settings to see what works best. For me AF-C with either D9 or D21 works superbly. Art series lenses try to emulate the Nikon AF so often they may not work as expected. With face/eye recognition it works slightly differently, but with AF-C and d9 the face recognition works really well.

I went with the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 ART lens as it was sharper than the Nikon lens when I compared images from the two with my D810. Both take a 77mm size filter. The Sigma lens cost $849 and the Nikon sells for $1,997. Why pay more than twice as much for a less sharp lens?

I have been very impressed by the performance of the Sigma lenses I have owned. The Sigma DX 30mm f/1.4 lens was as noticeably sharper on my D2x camera than any of my Nikon prime lenses.

Bought the Nikon 20 f1.8 over the Sigma 20 f1.4 for a reason that may not matter for your subjects, but does for mine. It focuses closer. I have absolutely no complaints about image quality. Its very sharp and I love how I can shoot straight into the sun and get almost no ghosts and no veiling flare. However, I do find myself often wishing I had a zoom instead, so I might at some point swap it out for a Nikon 14-24 or Tamron 15-30.

Many people at 20mm choose the Nikon because the flat front element allows filters as well. The Sigma is bulbous. At 24mm, I chose Sigma based on the strength of the 35mm I already owned. At 20mm, I would choose the Nikkor.

The Sigma 20mm f1.4 ART is (as all other Sigma Art lenses) absolutely superb in terms of sharpness, correctness and image quality. Sigma do NOT compromise on image quality. This, however, leads to these lenses being very big and heavy. So if you can live with a heavy lens, the ART probably gives you more for your money. I made a video with a lot of sample shots from the Sigma:

I've owned two Nikon 24mm 1.4's and am in the process of selling my Sigma 24mm 1.4 (to fund my 28mm 1.4E, not because I don't like it)

Right now on the used market the prices are roughly $650 for the Sigma, $1000 for the Nikon. I think they're extremely close, the Sigma barely sharper, the Nikon with slightly better character.

I'd get the 24/1.8G

Well, at some point, I willget it, based on great reviews, good price and the fact that I can shoot in DX mode and have a 28mm lens

So I recently saw some sample photos from the Sigma 24-35. Oh my that lens looks amazing!

Assuming I don't need f/1.4, is there any reason not to get it?

I dod never ise the latter ( Sigma 24-35mm f2 ) but it seems to be absolutely great in terms of sharpness and overall image quality and it is really unique!
The only little drawback would be the slightly smaller aperture compared to the 1.4 versions and of course the
Quite pronounced gain of weight !
So - for wedding and reportage work of any kind I imagine it to be fantastic and very versatile indeed!

I do have a Sigma 24mm 1.4 and the Nikon 20mm 1.8 right now.
Both do have their strengths but the Sigma is sharper for landscape work I have to admit.
Infortunately the Nikon would normally be the go-to lens for this for me ( I could crop as well if it was too wide in some situations...) but then I sometimes miss the sharpness of the Sigma ( which is quite a bit heavier though).
For storytelling kind of reportage pictures I prefer the Sigma quite a bit. Almost no distortion when not being to close to the subject and you can also crop to almost a 35mm angle of field ( for sure with a D800/10 ).

It is really a matter of use I guess. For landscapes the Sigma is often not wide enough ( would prefer one great zoom lens then, best would be Nikon 14-24mm and Tamron 15-30mm, though I personally don't like it's signature so much)

Absolutely none. I've owned it, and the lens is perfection if you want an impeccably sharp fast prime...bu you can't decide on a focal length

The only downside is that the lens is massive compared to the 35Art.

The fact that you already own a 24-70 and said that 24mm is not wide enough would be one reason. Other than that, I would never buy that lens due to the extremely limited zoom range. YMMV of course. It's a good quality lens, it's just big, heavy, and limited. You also likely aren't doing group shots at F2, so if you have no other use for it, it may be of limited utility.

If you're looking for wider than 24mm, I would look at a Nikon 20/1.8G or one of the WA zooms like a 16-35VR or 14-24. Personally I would want to retain the ability to zoom.

Bang for buck, I chose Sigma, twice. I have the 24 Art and the 35 Art. However, if you don't need f1.4, the Nikon 1.8 G versions are quite well respected, even though I have never tried those.

Some say the Sigmas appear too clinical, and that's honestly a matter of taste. Yes, they are clinical but how clinical is too clinical is a question you'll have to answer for yourself. But I will say, if you're a fan of the Nikon 58/1.4, you probably won't like the Art lenses that much.

For group shots where you want to have lots of little faces packed across the frame, you might appreciate the extraordinarily well-corrected qualities of the Sigma Art. My copy of the 24 is sharpest f2.8-f5 on a D700.
