Still largely in shock over the lack of progress in the 6D2 (and 24-105L II), but I'm recovering a bit to look ahead to what's right around the corner from Team C.

There's an 85 1.4 with the same anti-blue-fringe technology as the godsmack 35L II (plus 4 stops of IS) — and these new tilt/shift macro lenses look very interesting. A new 50, 90, and 135 for your super happy fun bendy time detail and decor shots.

I've got GAS.

Saw the title and thought there was an 85L f/1.4 that was also a T/S macro lens. I'm disappointed.

Just flipped over to Canon section and saw no mention of tilt shift macros. You can't mention something fun like that with no links.

Explain yourself.

^^ Canonrumors is reporting both of these.

The 85 Art is amazing but if they put the blue gunk in an 85 f/1.4 IS and it's even remotely like the 35L II, well..... bye bye 85 Art.

This new 85 1.4 going to be a $2300 USD +/- $200

Which is just not worth it when Sony has a 85 1.8 for $600

The game done changed

mb126, the Canon 85 will be under 1000 grams too. Not a featherweight, but not a brick either.

Zach, the Tamron 85 is about $600 and has IS. We got one this Summer and it's great on both the 5D4 and 7D2.

The Sony 85 is a super value lens, but the entire Sony line is not. It's a fine collection of glass, but taken as a whole I don't think anyone would call the fleet a bargain.

And I'm sure some bean counter at Sony right now is wondering why they priced it so low. These companies have to keep making money.

and Nikon has an 85 f1.8 under $400.00 that is pretty sweet, light and blazing AF.

I don't need it to be a featherweight because I carry the 85A for most of the day (and then bust out the 100 f/2) but any potential reduction is appreciated as long as the optics are there. I find the 35L II really manageable on the 5D4.

4-stop IS, projected size is 6oz lighter than 85A, and 77mm thread = replacement for 70-200 IS II AND 85A.
I can keep the 135L or 200L on a 3rd body for the times I really need the long FL.

The ONLY potential hiccup is if the AF speed is closer to the 85L than the 85A. If the AF speed is there they can charge me whatever they want and I'll pay it. This is a lens I can use for the next 20 years, as I will with the 35L II.
The 35L II is Otus-level optics with bulletproof construction and fast AF. The 35L II is optically better than the Otus 55 IMO. That was a game changer and worth every single cent.

Canon means business when they update L primes. I'm not worried about a 24-105 II-type flop here, that's a consumer zoom.

Sony's 85 f/1.8 is a terrific value like the Canon 100 f/2. But there is something terribly wrong in the world if the optics on these lenses are even close. Canon has had 20 years to come up with a new 85mm design (since the 85L II is optically the same as the first) and anything short of near-perfection is going to be a disappointment.

I've got a Canon 85 1.8 I can sell you for $250 — fastest AF from any Canon lens, and super light.

I disagree. If this lens replaces your fast 85 and your 70-200 IS it becomes very worth it.

I still use Canon 85mm 1.8 Great lens and fast focus. It does have CA, but manageable in post.

mb126, I'm sensing this is a mate to the 35L II. One for the ages.

I have the Sigma 85 1.4 (non-ART) and the Canon 85 1.8. For portraits the Sigma is great as long as I am not in a high contrast situation and have to worry about the terrible CA. The canon is for everything else since its AF is awesome. But I still have to worry about the CA. The CA for both has caused serious problems as it is so bad in some cases that b&w is the only real option. The 85L has the same issues with CA and is dreadfully slow to focus.

If the 85 1.4 has the CA control of the 35L II AND had snappy AF, I am all in on that. The IS is a bonus

Yeah, I used to have that lens when I shot Canon it is one of the best values in the photographic world but the 85 G has even faster AF.

The cheaper Nikkor is sharper than the old Canon with lower CA (though not as sharp or fringe-free as the Tamron). As for the older Nikkor 1.8 D, I owned it when I shot Nikon in the 1990s and it was a fine lens for its day, though not the speed demon the Canon 85 USM was/is.

This depends how you use your 70-200. I shoot the 70-200 for the IS in situations when f/1.4 does me no good.

For example, my family formals in churches are usually at 70-100mm, f/4-f/5.6, 1/60-1/100. Tripods are a little 1970s-ish for me so I use the 70-200 IS. Life would be easier if I could just take this with the 85 IS and crop/walk forward a few steps for tighter compositions.

I have longer primes if I want a portrait at 200mm.
