#2 for me. Pops more as a result of eliminting the vignetting plus brighter highlights in your pp. I like the quirky scene you've captured, with that modern sculpture surrounded by the classical architecture.

2nd one for me as well. I like the clean crisp feel to go along with the sharp lines and modern sculpture.

Nice capture and good eye!

Here's a quick edit to "tidy" it up a little to complement the clean lines and tones.

I prefer the crop in #2. Eye pulled in more.
I prefer the toning in #2. Scene has a somber feel, warmed slightly.
I prefer the sharpness/clarity in #2. Less dreamy, less unsettling to me.

Thank you folks,

Agree #2 also - an afterthought duo-tone version which to me works better.

A street scene from a German city (visit nearly 2 years ago) where I was stationed 1977-80...much melding of old and new. Most prevalent are solar panels on roofs of very old structures, a proliferation of roundabouts greatly altering the time to get from point A to B (but enhancing traffic flow), and wind-turbine farms dotting the landscape - not welcomed advances in the eyes of smaller villages and towns because of the noise and visual pollution of the landscape.

Thanks Dave for cleaning it up!

regards,

Bob

Thanks Scott,

Glad you had a look and commented,

I'd say the last version lost shadow detail and seems a bit crunchy.

Joining the conversation late but I'll echo others comments (especially Scott's) that #2 is the stronger image. I really like your final image, especially the tonality of the buildings. Very nice work.

Not sure if you have the room but what about a crop like this with the more pleasing tone of the second? Too busy?

We're on the same line of thinking. Lifting my quote fron B&WV:

Fred Amico wrote:
I still like the first one best, Bob.

Fred,

And I agree. The second an evolution from Photo Critique discussions but somehow it looks contrived, or maybe sterile is a better term, than the first which seems more natural to me. And I like the tonal range better in the original.

I appreciate your speaking up

Bob

I need to go back to the DNG and start over to see alternatives. Thanks for your suggestion,

Bob

Maybe not so much 'sterile' as 'simplistic', which I think works well for this image where there isn't much complexity going on. The basic textures, tones, lines and shapes are all coming together to making an image that won't drop jaws but is pretty pleasing to the view.

At least me.

Oh each version has merits, and the reworked version is more eye-catching for certain. Originally I was looking for subtle tonal gradation which got lost in the rush to duo-tone, at least for me. Also, the second would likely be more appealing in print versus the original - a conjecture that remains to be seen.

Does removing the light post and objects on the wall help or hinder?

It was a quite cool, damp, late in the afternoon, overcast, and typical German winter's day which plays in my mind also.

Maybe the original vision is not in the cards, but I'll play anyway

Best,

Bob

I also like the sharper versions and the re-crop. The one thing that bothers me with the sharper images, is the mobius highlight seems burned out. I would clone texture back into it if it cannot be recovered. I agree with Jeff, it is a very pleasing image to view.

Dale,

Yes, the mobius is problematic - needs patching up very early in the game.
