I bring my 24mm on backpacking trips instead of my 14-24mm due to size/weight/filter advantages. I run into many situations where I could use a wider lens, but my solution is to shoot 3 or more vertical shots and just stitch together in Photoshop. The software is so good now that occasionally i don't even use a tripod. But, most the time I shoot them on a pano head with a ball level.

I did fine on the Canadian side with a 24-70 on a D810. You have a long path along the river to choose your shooting distance (zoom with your feet)... this was right at the rail using 70mm (uncropped):
