The Spider (via the flatweb)?

The Mantid (lurking up above)?

Or does the mantid get them both?

Good capture. I can't work out what the mantid is interested in ?

Thanks.

Sorry if I wasn't clear

There is no 'prey item' visible as yet. It's the mandid's location that prompted my question.

The spider (unseen) has laid his web in anticipation of trapping the meal ... but the mantid has positioned himself so he has a vantage point overtop.

The question just jumped out at me as I discovered the mantid: If a fly (or similar) gets caught in the web, its movements will no doubt attract the spider and the mantid. The mantid would no doubt creep into a better position ... and the flatweb spider will likely come out to grab the snared prey ... so who gets the meal?

Wonder if the mantid would actually go for a bug stuck in the web ?
Only bugs I've seen taking stuck bugs out of webs are colonial wasps and damsel flies.

My vote would be yes. Mantids are motion-triggered, and anything moving down below him would set him into 'eat' mode (imo),

I did not have the same diabolical patience as our green friend, however, so I guess we'll never know, lol

I think the circumstantial evidence supports a conclusion that the mantid got them both.

Still there today ... directly positioned over the spider web ... and when I had a look there was no spider in the funnel

Indeed.

Now they're both gone.

Don't know if the mantid went on to greener pastures ... or became a bird-victim of his obviousness on the brown leaf
