p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · where to shoot the eclipse

I'm coming down from around Seattle to shoot the eclipse. Is there anywhere in particular I should go, or is just any area in Oregon/Wyoming just as good as any other? I'm flexible on where I can go.

I know it'll be challenging to find a landscape to fit into the eclipse since the sun will be so high

Any place you can avoid the smoke, clouds, and crowds will do just fine.

Somewhere along Union Pass Rd. (As far from the hordes as I can get! ) A relative may bring an off-road quad that will get us to the top of Union Peak.

So basically does it just not matter at all where I go for the eclipse as long as it's in the path of totality?

basically - unless you want to go to a scenic place. I mean you will be looking at the sky, but being in a magical place like the Wind Rivers would be better than standing on a street in Idaho Falls (or wherever). But the second option is MUCH quicker and easier, but 10344% more crowded. Also check the weather. Oregon was forecasting rain, and the smoke from the wildfires could affect it as well

There is a chance to include landscape elements if they are realily high and/or close. But that's proving hard to find in the path of totality.

Do you have anything around Oregon you'd recommend?

I think it goes over John Day, perhaps the Painted Hills. Don't know if it will be right near Bend. If so, you could hike up to Broken Top or something

Yup.

Or download the Google Earth overlay.

Cloud forecasts at: http://weather.cod.edu/forecast/
Select HRRR, NAM, or GFS, depending on how far out you want to guess.
Look for cloud cover, usually under 'Precipitation products' or similar.
At this point, 6 days out, the forecast is still completely up in the air, particularly for something as ephemeral as Cloud Cover. I'd wait 'till Friday or Saturday before pushing the panic button at attempting to re-locate to avoid weather. Also keep in mind that afternoon convection may "show up" on the forecast, but won't likely interfere with the late-morning event.

Good luck!
