p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D810 price at 2014 announcement vs today's D810 price

I read an article today that stated the D810 dropped $1000 in the first year. I do not believe it but I do not know.

Trying to roughly estimate what the D850 price will drop to in its first year....if at all.

Today, B and H sells the D810 for what ........... $2700+?

What was its price at its 2014 announcement?

I think it took over a year to go from 3200 to 2999

So that would be just about $200 in a year. Let's see what others say. Thank you.

well it sorta did with the gray market but not with the Nikon backed product. even then they did the usual parts shuffle. battery and charger separate. stuff like that.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3711752

Found this 2014 thread on same question. One guy said he did not wait for a price drop, buying the D810 for $3380 Canadian or $3075 U.S.

It's $2796 at B&H now. When it was released it was at $3300 for a long while before any drops, and even then I think it was a $200 rebate deal.

Both the D800 and D810 only dropped ~$300 or so over the majority of their lifespans, excluding one-time deals and other similar promotions. Now that the D850 is imminent you are seeing a bit more of a discount yet.

In Canada it went the opposite way due to the exchange rate...it costs more now than it did in 2014.

Does it really matter? Depreciation is depreciation, and there are many factors that decide the amount, be it cameras, cars, computers, or whatever. Why believe what you read in one article

Well, in Switzerland, the body sells for roughly 1'000$ less than at launch (currently about 2'300 usd new), Nikon official partner with 3yrs warranty.

Original MSRP of the D810 was $3,299.95 - same as the D800E when it was introduced.
I paid $2,995 in December, 2015
By the middle of 2016 a new USA version could be bought for $500 less than original MSRP, or $2,796.95

I'd expect that same scenario as far as price. It's Nikon's way. First mover price, then a small $300 reduction for holidays, then a free grip or something, then it will go back up to around $2,995 for the bulk of the sales. Then drop to $2,700 or $2,800 for the remainder of the camera life.

The question only matters if it's answered correctly. There are people on the board and elsewhere that like to rewrite history. So they want you to believe that MSRP has dropped by 33% within twelve months, which it didn't. And of course they can never prove it, they just say it. And then they try and make you feel that you're a fool if you had bought a camera body new (Although you got two years of use out of the new technology). Then, after two or three or four years they get around to finally buying something, and then can't stop crowing like a little red rooster about how much money they saved by waiting three years to get a D800E or something. For many of them I think it's more about their savings than photography since I rarely see them ever post any pictures. Instead every post is about how they never buy new, just used, regardless of the topic.

My point exactly. So for me, I see little point in trying to figure out how much camera X, or computer Y, will drop in price in their first year. If one can afford it and enjoys getting out and shooting with a brand new camera, then go for it. If my crystal ball could tell me what prices would be of everything one year from now, I would be making a fortune on the stock market.

Here is a history of Nikon D810 retail prices at selected vendors, showing the gradual decline since the beginning of 2015 - not to be confused with depreciation, which is what happens to the value of a good after it is purchased...

For me it's about alternate use of the money. Would spending ~$4,000 on a new D850 improve my photography in any noticeable way? Will I be able to charge more $$ because I buy one? Almost certainly not. In just a couple years used ones will be selling for less than half that. At that point a newer body could be justified as it should be a bit more reliable than a seven year old D800E. It's about alternate use of the money. If I did photography full time and could write down the costs, I'd have a different calculation. But then again, spending that money on advertising might be a better business decision........ While I have very big doubts a new camera will make a $2,000 difference, a new lens might, and $2,000 spent on a trip to an "exotic" place certainly will net me more interesting photos than a camera would. I think there are a still lot of people out there who deep down think that if they spend more on a camera, their shots will become more interesting. It just doesn't work that way.

for me, don't know, don't care, some people seem intent on ruining the enjoyment of photography by over analyzing every aspect of it right down to the penny that is saved

Two23 wrote:

There is that over analizing part again, there are some people that still enjoy the art of photography and are not worried about if they can save a buck, make a buck or will this body make me breakfast in the morning so that the wife doesn't have to

Two23 wrote:

i am having a bitch of a time waiting for 2 months let alone 2 years, life is short, enjoy it now

Kent, great to hear rational thinking rather than just out of control exuberance.
