Sun and pears by Viramati, on Flickr

Vignetting is there mostly at 16mm and to a degree throughout the range if you look at the uncorrected profile in Lr CC but the lens correction does a pretty good job. I have the vignetting control turned of in my A7rII's but if you turn it on you get no shading right into the extreme corners but I haven't really tested to see if this is effecting IQ

Thanks for your info. Looks OK, albeit not on the same level as Zeiss. As always, nine-bladed apertures look OK, but I very much prefer ten.

I suppose you can't have it all as it doesn't have the sunstars of the Loxia 21 but the bokeh (as already mentioned) is wonderful.

Not taking the divorce option.

I have a good 12-24 and just not sure this 16-35 is worlds better and worh the extra money. Given that I have the Batis 25 and a outstanding FE 35mm 1.4 now which I'd rather shoot than any zoom at 35mm. As tempting as a 2.8 lens is I have a fast 25/35 that can handle low light stuff. Besides all that 12mm for me is a really fun focal length even doing creative landscape stuff close up. Far less boring than a 16-35. But that's me

Fred I can tell your doing the divorce option bud. Lol

I just tested again and it does not help making a decision: 16-35GM or 12-24G...

AT 16mm f/5.6 they are very similar (I would say aside from color differences, resolution is very close, center, mid and edges)
AT 24mm f/5.6 same as above...

So, if you mostly shoot landscapes at 16-24, both zooms will give you about same resolution at f/5.6 and smaller. One has 12mm and the other 35mm as options. You need to decide which FL is more important to you. (12 or 35)

I compared the 16-35GM to my FE 35/2.8 (pristine copy) and they are very similar starting at

The 16-35/2.8 GM aperture has 11 blades so sunstars will have 22 points. I don't love the sunstar rendering.
Vignetting is worse at 16mm f/2.8 but nothing extreme like the 4-stop vignetting from the Canon 16-35/2.8L III.
I didn't measure yet but it seem pretty average.

I have the solution: Sony G 35 2.0

Fred Miranda wrote:
It's not surprising we are loving the 16-35GM rendering...

At 35mm f/2.8, background rendering is slightly smoother when compared to the same scene shot with the Zeiss 35/1.4 ZA @f/2.8.
Bokeh balls are much cleaner with only traces of onion ring pattern while the Zeiss 35/1.4 has lots of it. The balls are very rounded at f/2.8 for the GM (wide-open) while the Zeiss not so much (2-stops down). At f/2.8, they are very similar in LoCA correction which I consider a great performance for the GM zoom since it's wide-open.

The Zeiss has more contrast and vivid colors while the

I won't have any time soon to re-test both lenses for bokeh rendering (16-35/2.8GM @35/2.8 vs 35/1.4ZA @35/2.8) so I will post a couple of my kitchen images.

Here are some samples showing how slightly smoother the 16-35GM at 35mm's OOF rendering is compared to the ZA's at same aperture (f/2.8)

ZA showing more vivid colors and higher contrast.

On the examples above you can also see how the ZA's colors are more vivid and tonality has more contrast.
It's worth mentioning that the 35/1.4 ZA is slightly longer than the 16-35GM @ 35mm. I believe the zoom is 33 or 34mm.

Very interesting to see the Bokeh favors the GM at that fstop although I have mentioned before (although not sure if most people believed me lol) that when I compared the Zeiss to my Canon EF 35mm 1.4 L ii to see how much I was losing in Bokeh rendering vs the gains in sharpness and CA control...I was surprised to find that the Canon was actually smoother in some areas so in that regards so the Zeiss was not untouchable as I first have thought.

Thanks for sharing those samples!

The Zeiss does seem much sharper @ 2.8. I Really want a good copy of that 35mm 1.4.

Might be due to a little more contrast. We need to remember the 35 1.4 is a dream boat at 1.4,1.7 and F2 as well

My dreamboat eventually, maybe, hopefully? :-)

I ended up switching GM's and now have the 24-70 GM instead of the 16-35mm
The deciding factor was a shoot I have coming up where I'll be outside and wont be able to change lenses easily. Turns out it was sharper @ 35 anyway. Wasn't an easy decision, the 16-35 is an awesome WA zoom.

Has anyone done a comparison between the 16-35 GM and the Batis 18? Wondering if the GM is as sharp wide open as the Batis.

Much more likely that the 35/1.4 is ~35.4 and the 16-35 is ~34.9.

Yes, it might be contrast rather than sharpness. But even if the 35 1.4 does have a very slight advantage in sharpness compared at 2.8, the 16-35 does not look bad at 35mm. Given what Roger was saying, I expected the zoom to look significantly worse in comparison to the 35mm prime. Of course, Fred's shots were not really designed to assess comparative sharpness. But still, the zoom looks pretty damn good at 35mm.

Actually, although I didn't put it in the report, at infinity the GM is 16.5-34mm.

I test stuff for 3 days on a half-million dollars worth of equipment just to confirm what Fred already knows

I actually like that the GM zoom is a bit wider. The RX1R Sonnar 35mm is even wider..

Wait!! You said the GM starts at 16.5mm...One more argument to convince myself to keep both and use the 12-24mm for the 12-16mm range!
