p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What is the least amount of gear you could shoot a wedding with with?

Thought of this question while loading my car for the morning. I bring a huge arsenal to most weddings, but a lot of it never leaves the car. Maybe I just have a desire to be prepared, maybe it is comforting, maybe it is just to mask some insecurity. Whatever the case, I could certainly do the job with less.

My core equipment is in my TT Airport Navigator bag. 3 bodies, 6 lenses, 2 speed lights, 2 triggers, and some misc. I could probably make it happen with this bag, 2 8' light stands, 2 clamps, 1 folding softbox.

Maybe that Ian even too much. Thoughts? Anyone else bring 11 speed lights?

5D4+50 STM+ a bounce flash in the right circumstances would work. I think most here could still do very, very nice work with that.

My basic kit is x3 cameras, 17-40mm, 24-105mm, 70-200mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 2x flashguns, 2x triggers and receivers plus miscellany. If I want to travel light I will ditch the 70-200, it's my least used lens and takes up the most space. If I know the reception venue is particularly dark I might add some LED's with stands.

2 5D4's, a 24-70 and a 135L get most of my work done. I do use everything I bring in the roller, except the 16-35. I can go three weddings without pulling it out, but then I'll hit a super crazy drunk dancing set and I'm glad I have it.

I love using ultra wide for late evening dancing. Getting it right into the action.

What is the Least amount of gear I could shoot a wedding with?

Least amount I HAVE shot a wedding with was a C330 Mamiya and a 45 Metz.
Couple must have been happy, Bride bought her sister to me to shoot her wedding 4 months later.

I used to take a heap of gear but I found that rather than improve my potential, it held me back. I have been doing this a long time, I don't need to cover every eventuality, I can adapt, modify and overcome to get a decent result and work with what I have gear and location wise.

Don't even carry backup as such anymore. I take 2 Bodies with different lenses, a flash each and one tele lens and I'm fine.
If one cam falls over I can use the other and ring the wife to bring the backup kit from home.
Never more than an hour away most of the time and If I will be, then I take more crap with me and stress about leaving it in the car the whole time.

I have never lit up churches and reception places with flashes on stands and never seen or heard of many that do here.

The least amount that I COULD shoot a wedding with would be one body and a 35.

The least amount that I would feel COMFORTABLE shooting a wedding with would be two bodies, 35, 35, 85, and a pair of flashes, and a lightstand.

What I ACTUALLY bring to weddings is 4 bodies, 35, 35, 85, 24-70, 70-200, 100macro, 17-40, 135, 6 flashes, 5 lightstands, softbox, way too many batteries. This is for two photographers, but most of the the stuff doesn't get used at most weddings.

It's time to cut back.

Why do you need two 35's?

I shoot most weddings only using the following:

(2)d750s, 20, 28, 58, 105. 1 yn360 or yn300 , 3 godox speedlites with two transmitters.

I could easily shoot a wedding with only:

(2) d750s, 28, 58, 105, and one yn360 and two godox master/slave speedlites.

If I was trying yo go as light as possible no matter what,

(2) d750s 28, 105, one yn360 or two speedlites and a transmitter.

In my "comfortable" scenario I would want a backup. In reality, I bring two because my wife also uses one!

Recently I have been shooting with less and less gear. Call it lazy, or just getting old but the constant switching lenses and lugging around multiple bags doesnt do it for me anymore.

2 -5D3
35 1.4L
135 F2 L

In a waist pouch I will carry the 17-40 just in case I need a really wide shot.

Then 2 AD200's and im pretty set.
