Nah, minor inconvenience.

If you want GPS, click on a Lightroom tab, enter the addy, and add to the image.

Nothing to it.

1) that is an exaggeration of reality, and 2) it would be hell deleting all the BS off your card/hard drive.

I have checked Sony out and their specs are an exaggeration.

If you looked at all the nature/sports awards, no one was using them. Its okay if we disagree, but maybe we agree on many points?

I agree with you that Sony has some great tech, and some cool ideas; they're just an incomplete system IMO, and only worthwhile if you have minimal lens needs.

What you're failing to see is Nikon has some 'great tech' too ... far more of it than

there!s so much fud in this post it's simply sad, but if it makes you feel better go for it.

Huh? If you knew me, and were face-to-face, you would have all the fud.

What makes me "feel better" has nothing to do with this thread topic.

What makes me confident in Nikon, over the newbies, is exactly as I have stated.

The level of enthusiasm that we have for our favored camera brand borders on extremes fanboyism at times, but as long as we're happy with what our companies do next they're able to continue to make what we want, that's all that's important. While we can debate whether or not Nikon can do no wrong, the fact is undeniable that the last few years from them business and financials wise hasn't been the strongest. From the development and then cancellation of the DL line and the fact that they suffered extraordinary loses, one can hope that the D850 is the first of a strong line of sellers. The D500 and D5 are fantastic cameras, no doubt, they have great technology yet may not have been the financial successes that Nikon had hoped for. If they can't stay profitable, they can make the greatest products in the world, but if they can't make money, they won't be able to succeed in the long run.

sure, you could be shooting with a d500 right now, all the DR in the world won't help you with the pictures you would be getting on the d850 right now

that all depends on what your shooting at the time. I use my D500 everyday that I shoot. I don't think the D850 will be a replacement for it as they augment each other.

I disagree. I prefer that to be an add on that is self powered as is. the GPS I use in my work works on all of my Nikon bodies.
mine gives me:
- internal 1900mah batt that when depleted switches over to cameras battery and that's after quite a few hours
- position
- direction
- logging (4GB memory)
- gps or baro alti
- wireless remote capable
- and more

it is rather bulky but sits in the flash shoe and connects via the remote ports (cable dependent for models of camera)

Sure, because you can use it NOW, and not be missing shots that may not be around when the D850 comes out.

Ok.. I got the cliche responses to my question so I'll rephrase. In 3 months time is there any functional advantage in getting a D500

Not really. DX is a crippled format, compared to the splendor of Nikon FX.

Is FX "crippled" compared to medium format then?

I suppose I would be wasting my time in asking you to back up your statement with facts? Or are you limited to espousing the conventional wisdom as if it's the gospel?

Just once I wish someone would explain why FX offers better image quality than a crop sensor. I'm not saying it doesn't, but I am saying that no one seems to be able to write down the why of it. The rationale is usually some variation of this:

1. More photons.
2. ?
3. Better IQ!

or

1. Different DoF.
2. ?
3. Better IQ!

Can someone help me out by fleshing out #2?

The only unique advantage that comes to mind is that the D500's AF spread covers the entire width of the imaging area, which isn't possible on an FX body, although one can argue the AF area a D850 would cover nearly the same actual area/effective number of pixels (20MP), so it becomes a usability rather than technical advantage.
