Please don't compare the stiff, inflexible, ergonomically-irritating, lens-deficient, AF-challenged, 1-trick pony of the A7rII to user-friendly, highly-capable, multi-dimensional, lens-rich D850.
The reason other people will switch is because every other camera is deficient by comparison, especially from other vendors, and especially in lens line-up.
Only Canon has a comparable lens selection ... but their 5D MK IV is pale, under-powered, and anemic by comparison. When Canon finally upgrades in 2 years, their 5D MK V will still be under-powered by comparison (same as it took 3 new 5Ds to 'almost' equal the D810).
If you have any doubts, compare the specs of Canon's "new" 6D II to Nikon's 3 year old offerings
Sony maybe will come up with a bigger sensor ... next year ... but it still won't have Base ISO 64, it still won't be as rounded, and Sony still won't have Nikon's lens selection.
Fuji? Olympus? Pentax?
The D850 will have a better sensor than the A7rII and everything else ... it will have better DR than the A7rII ... plus a 100x better ergonomics, features, and auto-focus capability ... not to mention the in-camera stacking.
Better still, those who buy the D850 will avail themselves to more lens choices than any other manufacturer offers ... including a 40-year history of AI and AI-S lenses (again, adapter-free).
To own anything else will be limiting in some way ... to own the D850 will be liberating in every way.
Honestly, it's pretty much that simple. ...Show more →
Fair enough, but then I fully expect the A7RIII to be a huge improvement. It's guaranteed to get A9 AF, battery, better ergonomics, EVF etc, just shoot a lot slower, but if the A9II can do 12fps, then so could the A7RIII. Also how do you know what any new Sony sensor will offer?
I think 6 months form now we will have some seriously good kit to choose from. All I can say the 5Ds II better be an massive upgrade, but I seriously doubt it'll get with in cooee of the D850 knowing Canon. I'll be selling my 5DsR after Xmas and picking up D850 early next year most likely. The hard part is choosing glass, as I already have Canon's best in each range I need, so not sure what to get with the Nikon, I don't want duplication.
