p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Fallen Joshua

A couple of weeks ago, I arrived at Joshua Tree at 6PM on a Saturday evening. I stayed awake all evening, sunset, and through the middle of the night chasing compositions and Milky Way. I made it until 3:30AM Sunday morning, and I decided to get about 90 minutes of sleep in the Key's View parking lot. At 5AMish, i woke up and hiked up a 1/4 mile peak adjacent to the parking lot and nabbed this image of sunrise.

Hey Ryan,

A very cool sunrise. It's a cool idea to use the fallen Joshua Tree, but it's so dark in the foreground that I think it becomes more of a distraction and breaks up the visual flow of your shot. Maybe try pulling some more detail out of the ground? Maybe brighten it up a bit? Not sure if that will help. Did you take any sunrise shots from there without the fallen tree?

Thanks for the comments Jim. I was struggling with the decision to raise the shadows more in the foreground. I did brighten the tree a little, but I felt that the surroundings of the tree did not offer enough interest.

I'm leaning with you though, the foreground probably should be a little brighter. I'll adjust when I get home this evening and give it another look.
