p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tenthredo Figwort Sawfly with Prey

This was one of the various wasps I saw on my recent walk in a grassy riverside meadow. It was eating what looks like a small sawfly adult (Arge sp.?).

The wasp is about the same size as a Vespula but, unless it is an extreme variant (no backward-pointing extensions of the black abdominal bands) of a Dolichovespula, I have no idea what it is. The yellow line around the top of the thorax is probably definitive but I have not seen it in any image on the internet.

Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 x2TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/250 to 1/500 at f11, sunlight, hand-held.

The last two images are not so good but may help to identify the wasp.

Very interesting comments you make; you really did considerable searching....and very high quality close images of the big, exciting small world

I tried finding this animal (insects belong to Animalia) via several modest, but reliable references I have here. My references are NA though.

And then I tried on the net too.

Let's hope someone can identify this. You tried for sure. Thanks and please keep up the good work.

I have been told, elsewhere, that this is the Figwort Sawfly Tenthredo scrophulariae. I have checked and agree.

I didn't check its waistline* largely because I didn't think sawflies were predators.

Sawflies are wasps but don't have the narrow "wasp waist".

I have edited the title.
