p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hornet Hanging Around

Yesterday I was in a riverside grassy meadow, looking for macro subjects.

This hornet was rotating around a vertical axis, as though a leg was caught in a spider web. A close look showed it to be feeding. It was doing this under the canopy of an umbel flower so access was limited and, together with the rotation back and forth, I was unable to get a head-on shot. Anyway, early, in the sequence, there is a winged insect visible at its mouth. It is probably a honeybee.

Olympus EM-1 Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro at 1/250 to 1/800 second f11, ISO 800, daylight, hand-held.

Thanks, everyone.

There is a lesson here. I had a closed mind, as I started shooting, convinced that the hornet's leg was tangled in some spider's web. Had I looked more closely, I could have found a way of getting the story straight from the start.

I agree that the later shots are the better images but the story is mostly over.
