p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sites with good writing about photography

I enjoy reading good quality writing about photography and I've found a few sites that I visit regularly. How about you? Do you have any favourite sites where people write well about photography (history, ideas, styles, approaches, etc.)? If so, please post them here.

I suggest the following guidelines for posting:

* There are tons of gear sites out there and they're easy to find. For this thread, please suggest sites that are about photography (broadly) rather than just gear.

* Free or paid is fine (but free is better!)

* Sites post original, well written content (rather than just news releases and links to other sites).

* There are quite a few where posts appear once in a blue moon, if that often. The best suggestions will be to sites where people are committed to posting regularly.

* In your posting, please provide the site name and URL, and a short note on what you like about it.

* To keep the thread interesting and useful for people, I suggest we don't post responses trashing sites or other peoples' suggestions. If you don't like a site someone suggested, that's fine -- no need to explain why.

And to get the ball rolling, here are a few that I visit regularly (in addition to FM of course!)

The Online Photographer
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/
Mike Johnston posts regularly and curates responses from people who like to think and write about photography. There are some gear posts, but also lots of history and stories. The responses to his posts are often as good or better than the original posting.

Ming Thein -- Free
https://blog.mingthein.com/
Ming's blog can be a bit polarizing. Some people find him pretentious and don't like his style. Since becoming a Hasselblad ambassador recently, it's become a bit less interesting. However, I like a lot of his work, and he's a very thoughtful guy. I use some of his ideas in my teaching (e.g., the importance of the Idea, Subject, Light and Composition).

The Photo Fundamentalist -- Free
http://thephotofundamentalist.com/
Thomas Stanworth's site contains some interesting, in-depth writing about photography. It's not updated as regularly as other sites, but he likes black and white photography and writes about it from time-to-time, so I check it out regularly.

Lens -- Free
https://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/
The New York Times publishes a very nice page about photography, with lots of photo essays.

On Landscape -- Paid
https://www.onlandscape.co.uk/
On Landscape is a web-based subscription "magazine" dedicated to landscape photography. It's run by Tim Parkin, and has a strong focus on UK photographers and landscapes. I enjoy the writing a lot of the time and find it overall useful. I think it was On Lanscape that introduced me tot he idea of using tilt-shift adapters on a full frame camera.

This is also posted in "Forum and Miscellaneous". I asked Fred to cross-post to General Gear talk so it could be seen on the front page. Thanks Fred!

Cheers. I appreciate it by the way. Sometimes I get busy and drift away from immersing myself in the, how do I say it, academic/theoretical/photo history side of practice? Nonetheless, it's something I value and find inspirational.

You start a conversation you can't even finish it
You're talkin' a lot, but you're not sayin' anything
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed
Say something once, why say it again?

Obviously the Talking Heads were not bloggers Without repetition many bloggers would have little to say.

Here's my contribution. Eric Kim http://erickimphotography.com/blog/ I used to think that 123 XYZ was the king-of-self-promotion until I discovered this site. It's not all about sales tho, there is much about photo history http://erickimphotography.com/blog/2015/03/16/6-lessons-rene-burri-can-teach-you-about-street-photography/ and philosophy (as it applies to shooting pics) http://erickimphotography.com/blog/2015/06/10/free-e-book-zen-in-the-art-of-street-photography/

NSFW because of crude language.

If you like street photography and you don't like Eric Kim, I recommend Blake Andrews' blog. He's a west coast photographer -- film only I think -- who writes interesting posts. By interesting I mean often funny, sometimes strange, and occasionally really crude (so consider yourself warned!)

One thing I like about his blog is he regularly interviews other photographers and showcases their work.

Here's another interesting site by commercial photographer Zack Arias. DEDPXL
http://dedpxl.com/blog/

He's an interesting character and posts some good material. He also has guest posts from other photographers who can write well. There's a recent guest post by Sid Ceaser about the Hasselbald 500c/m he got for his wife. It was repaired by legendary Hasselblad technician John Kovacs (apparently one of the people who worked on the NASA modifications of the Hasselblad cameras used in the space program). That story is here: http://dedpxl.com/a-big-dumb-button/

Stieglitz, Adams and Sontag are important figures in American photography. But a lot has happened since they worked and wrote. Fields move on, and there are always more directions to explore. I started with St. Ansel, but I'm not stopping with him (even though, ironically for this conversation, I'm just now reading the book 400 Photographs which showcases his work over his whole lifetime).

OK, I see where you're going. I think we're working on two different questions here! To rephrase it, mine was simply "What's your favourite photography site to read for pleasure and interest?" You're asking much bigger questions, which I interpret as "Has anything of value been added to what's been written about photography since Stieglitz, Adams, Sontag, (etc)?" and "Instead of reading what others have written, shouldn't we spend more time thinking for ourselves?"

Your questions deserves a whole other thread (but I'm not sure you'll get a lot of takers). My humble thread simply aimed to beat the bushes to scare up some interesting sites to while away a bit of time pleasantly.

Cheers, Rob

The PDN Pulse blog puts out a weekly collection of links every Friday called "Great Weekend Reads in Photography & Filmmaking". There are usually a dozen or so links. You should be able to find a few that appeal to you no matter what you like.
