Thanks, will look at it.
I have WD hard drives, USB based. Is there a way I can continue backing up to them. There is a lightening to USB connector available but what I have read is that even this won't work with external hard disks. Is that the case?

Get yourself one of these...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00TI3WQJS/ref=pe_1909131_77697001_tnp_email_TE_AMZLdp_9

Connect an external drive to it. Download the app on the iPad, connect to the device with its built in wifi and use the app to transfer the photos/videos from the iPad to the drive or the drive to the iPad

I've just ordered one and plan I want to travel without my laptop but back-up/offload my images to an external drive and/or my iPad for viewing.

There's also this much more expensive but waterproof device https://www.gnarbox.com

That's a basic iPad function. You can connect your iPad to your computer with the cable that came with it and you use to charge it and import the photos and videos to your computer as if you were connecting a camera or memory card. You can use either iTunes or whatever import method you use for cameras.

As per above --- connect the iPad via iTunes and you will find the iPad listed in your computers directory as an external hard drive. You can then copy the images to another folder or file.

All the Best

Oh, currently I have no computer, only couple of hard drives. I bought this with expectation that I will edit my photos here.

Find a friend that will share a computer with two USB ports. Connect the iPad and one of you hard drives and yer in business. Note: it'll take some time to complete the transfers this way.

All the Best
