p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Do you shoot RAW, JPEG or both?

Searched for this as a past topic but I may have missed it. This topic posted on Post Processing/Printing and Nature/Wildlife forums.

Currently, I shoot only RAW.

I want to know which tactic will save me post time.

How about you and why please? Do you shoot RAW, JPEG or both?

Thank you much

Robert

RAW & LJPG from the Wedding and event shootings.

I use a 128CF for RAW and 32SD for LJPG because the size ratio is 4 to 1.

I shoot RAW. JPEG used to provide a time advantage yet if you have a powerful computer that is mostly gone.

My exposures are usualy spot on yet for the times I miss it's great to have the extra range to dig into from a RAW file.

Raw only. If I need jpegs, I can generate them from the raws.

I shoot RAW - not in the raw.

I don't see any advantage for me in having a JPEG since I shoot only for my own pleasure ~ Ron

I shoot jpg's with all my cameras except my Canon 1D4. That camera I shoot raw. The jpg's look awful from the 1D4.

Also, Photoshop CS6 won't read raw files from my 80D or my Sony RX10M3. (I know all about converting them ... it's not worth it to me)

The best reply I've ever had on one of my shots was a person telling me what a great photo I had and they'd like to see the raw file.
I told them I shoot jpg's, and suddenly the photo was worthless. I haven't had any responses like that for a while now.
I think people are getting used to the fact that raw isn't for everyone, and that the jpg engines in cameras now days do a better job.

I shoot both and if I don't like the jpeg I reprocess the raw file.

Raw only. As Ron, I only shoot for my enjoyment and actually rather enjoy post processing as part of the process

If both slots are the same speed, raw to both. If the second slot is slower, raw to slot 1, jpg to slot 2.

RAW+jpg (max)
Only about 0.0001% when RAW colors don't co-operate, it's easier to work on JPG (only happened a couple of times for sunset into sun colors).
The daily benefit is navigating through thousands of images to pick the keepers to work on (RAW). It's faster to navigate the smaller sized JPG with the OS or variety of picture showing apps.
Raw has most info, allows for changing while balance. JPG always loses information due to it's nature of being compact.

For me the question is a travel one - if at home, or longer trips where I carry a laptop, raw only as my "to friends" jpegs can be generated in LR in seconds plus I can do initial culling and edits while travelling. But - on many shorter trips I take only an ipad, and the hassles with raws in iOS mean I shoot raw+jpeg so that my Olympus wifi connect can port my sharing jpegs to the phone and/or ipad for emailing (and final raw edits need to await returning home).

"RAW only since 2003, except on my cell phone."

And now with Manual Camera app, with many smartphones, you can shoot raw on your cell phone too.
