Oly 75/1.8 vs. Oly 40-150/2.8 Pro at 75mm?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Oly 75/1.8 vs. Oly 40-150/2.8 Pro at 75mm?

I am considering adding an Olympus 75/1.8 to my Oly M4/3 kit for the occasional low-light, outdoor wildlife scene and for Hi-Res mode shooting with my EM1.2 bodies. I already own the Oly 12-100/4 and the Oly 40-150/2.8 Pro among other Oly Pro lenses in my profile. So, can you offer an opinion of what, if any additional sharpness I could achieve with the 75/1.8 compared to the 40-150/2.8 Pro at 75mm? Of course the max apertures are different, so any comparison to the aforementioned lenses would be to a common aperture setting. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The 75/1.8 is slightly sharper in the center than both the 40-150 PRO and 12-100 PRO.

More importantly, the OOF blur is nicer, and the f1.8 aperture is great for low-light work.

Not a huge differences in sharpness, as both zooms are very sharp. It will give a much smoother background rendering, along with the ability for shallower DoF than the 40-150/2.8 though. I don't think the 40-150 has poor background rendering at all, however, it can sometimes look a little "nervous". The 75/1.8 is a little smoother, even at the same aperture. See attached image, not even shot wide open, but the trees in the background are very smooth, no jitter/nervous bokeh which the 40-150/2.8 tends to produce.

Its also much smaller/lighter for carrying around. All and all its a little jewel of a lens. Well build, compact, yet dense/solid, with great rendering and sharpness, and at used prices, very, very reasonable in cost.

Its about everything you could want in a lens, and IMO, the "best" in the m4/3 lineup, with really no peer in other mounts.

I agree wholeheartedly about the 75 1.8 being tops. Here's another sample - from an E-M5.

I'm actually considering getting an E-M1 Mk II if any more show up reconditioned, largely because I have this lens.

While I appreciate the efforts and the sample street images to provide input about my inquiry in my original post, I have no interest in looking at street photography portraits as they really don't tell me anything about what i wanted to know. I was looking for feedback on the quality of images and the out of focus areas of a lens that would be used for 150mm efective focal lengths images of landscape scenes some containing animal or environmental scenes. That focal length for landscape may seem a little long to many of you but my upcoming travels to the Great Bear Rainforest of coastal British Columbia and the primary objective of a fast lens in the 100+ focal length range is something of interest as I will be in a fairly dark forested environment even in mid day.

That's exactly why I posted those images - to show the lens IQ and OOF blur.

The out of focusing rendering of a lens, as well as the transition, is in no way dependent upon the subject matter of a lenses....?

Given you have no interest in the advice and contributions people have provided, all of which perfectly illustrate the specific questions you wanted to see, I would say I for one am done with this thread.

Quite simply, either purchase or rent the lens, shoot what you consider valid subject material, compare to your existing glass, and move forward using the gear you prefer

If you're talking about using the lens such that the distant is in focus and the near is out when shot wide open for a landscape, then I don't think you'll find much difference between the pro zooms and the 75mm f/1.8. That is, unless your near out of focus elements are extremely near and large in the field of view. Then Bobby's images give a good example of what the OOF areas would look like.

Really no need to be so "snooty" about this. I was looking for some different kinds of images - more distance and landscape instead of the more close up examples that were provided. Moving on.

Thank you, Erich. Good clarification. Would like to see some images that are not as close up as those offered. But, I will pursue other ways to get the info I am looking for (without the back-lash from some here). Thanks again Erich.

I have well over 10,000 images taken with this lens but very rarely (if ever) did I use this lens for landscape work - you don't need the speed or the shallow DOF for most landscape work. The 75/1.8 lens is better for portraits and people photos. Anyone of the Olympus PRO zooms will do an excellent job for landscape, and for low-light situations I would either use a tripod or crank up the ISO - as I would not shoot a landscape below f2.8 - I would usually use the sweet spot i.e. f4.0 or f5.6.

James, I just took some shots with my E-M5s at longer distances with both lenses, at f2.8 - f5.6. If you know how to use Dropbox (which I have but need refreshing on how to employ it), I'll give you the ORFs.

Ernie: Thanks for the offer. I have never used DropBox so if that's the route we need to take, I need instructions.

Here's a tutorial on how to use Dropbox for Windows. On a Mac, it's pretty much identical. In brief, Dropbox sets up a folder on your computer in which you can copy files. Anything copied into the DropBox folder is then uploaded to the DropBox servers in the cloud. It is possible to share a file with another DropBox user. DropBox provides about 2.2 GB of storage free; more than that requires a subscription. It's a great way to send/share large files with another person when the file size exceeds that allowed in email.

I think I live close to you, James. If interested, you could come by, and I will show you DropBox firsthand.
