So, as the title says, I have a D7100 and a SB700 speedlight. I can trigger the flash using commander mode on the camera. I think this works because the popup flash on the camera activates the SB700.

Now if I put the speedlight inside a softbox, will it still be triggered?

Thanks

The sensor on the flash body needs to be able to see the popup.

So it can work with the head in the softbox, as long as the body is outside.

Yup, it should be. It is extremely sensitive. I have used it outdoors and without line of sight and it still works perfectly. It even works if I put the camera *in front* of my umbrellas if I am indoors.

Yes, under these conditions:
- the body of the SB-700 is rotated such that the CLS sensor faces the front of the softbox - this assumes your SB is entirely in the softbox. If the softbox has one of those head-inside / body outside mounts, then the SB-700 sensor needs to either face the pop-up or be rotated to face something the pop-up signals will bounce off of.
- the softbox is facing the subject (off of which the pop-up CLS commands will bounce) - again assuming the SB is entirely inside the softbox.
- indoors, or outdoors in shade (too much ambient light makes CLS work less well)
- range from pop-up to subject to softbox is limited.

To understand the range limitations, try it and see how far you can get the camera and/or softbox away from the subject.

Thanks people. I'll give it a try. This is the type of softbox I want to use:

That will be fine. Just rotate, as mentioned, the body of the flash to point the sensor at the front of the softbox. You'll get the best sensitivity that way.

If it is very close by and not in bright sun, yes
Inside it should be reliable if close by

Better yet sell the SB700 and buy a lithium godox flash with radio system and have money left over.
