I was looking for slime moulds to photograph when I came across a colony (3-4 larvae) living on top of this toothed crust fungus (probably Phlebia uda).

They have a network of diaphanous slime trails and more extensive, two-dimensional structures on top of the teeth. In one place the part behind the larva is iridescent. The larvae frequently curved their heads violently side to side. This (images 3 & 4) seems to have been some kind of manipulation of the slime.

EM-1, Oshiro 2:1 50mm macro, x2TC, triple flash, hand-held.

The stereo is crosseye.

The masters of macro are always showing us nature we overlook. Amazing and fascinating. I agree that it does not look like a comfortable place to live.

Thanks, everyone. I became aware of the slime trails only part-way through the session and it was not until I examined the images on my PC that I saw the extent of the structures. This told me that the larvae were resident on the spines (which are softer than they look).

Thanks, Adrian.

Sorrry about the slow response. Busy times, with life getting in the way of the important stuff!
