Brian,

A nice set.

Yes, L. calceatum. The red on the male's abdomen varies in extent.

How do you get enough shots to focus stack on a live insect? I have not been successful in doing that.

Thanks,
John

John, depending on the bug, how it's behaving and the DOF I would like, I only take between 2 and 8 shots of live bugs for stacking. Often I'm holding the flower or plant the bug is on in my left hand and then resting the camera lens on the same hand. This stabilises the shot and allows me to shoot quickly whilst moving the camera in towards the subject. I'd guess I take about 1 shot a second doing this. Looking where the image just goes OOF in the viewfinder and making sure that part is in focus in the next shot.
I still often need to do some editing of the final stack as frequently antennae or a leg will move. This I do within zerene stacker by copying back from one of the original shots onto the stack.

I should add I only do this to get sharp detail with a reasonable DOF.

I've never had much luck focus stacking on a live bug.

Then again, I haven't always had a D500. I'm wondering if a 10fps somewhat slow manual focus sweep would provide some sort of useful result.

That's an experiment worth trying actually.

Nice shots, not to distract or anything...but this has given me an idea or three.
