I currently shoot the 1DX2, 5D4 and 1DX. But 1DX will be sold soon as I just don't use it. I accidentally took it out on the kayak the other day and then realized I hadn't grabbed the 1DX2....man did it feel antiquated.

But really the 1DX IMO has better image rendering, better colours and just slightly better high ISO performance than the Mark II. All of that is fairly subtle but I still look at a 1DX image and find it more pleasing. But I wouldn't make much of that in a decision.

My favourite things with the 1DX2 are the f/8 AF (the entire reason I bought it) and the red AF points (something I thought I didn't even want but now can't live without).

There are a whole bunch of other little improvements in button customizability and other features but all of those are in the 5D4 also.

I found the 1DX2 AF outperforms the 5D4 in low light and out performs the 1DX. I had a hard time with 5D4 and 1DX in early morning jungle type of light in CR. The 1DX2 did much better and the red-AF points made it a lot easier also. AF in good light is hard to say but both 1 series seem to drive big lenses a bit faster. The 1DX2 AF at f/8 is noticeably faster than the 5D4 AF at f/8 even though they seem to have the same system on paper. This was noted also by Arash in his 5D4 review.

My final thought though is if you aren't using f/8 combos a lot I'd stick with another 1DX over the other two.

definitely not a fan of burning my money. Especially when I'm using insurance money and one mistake makes it even more a loss for me than it already is.

The 5d4 resolution boost is great, especially for sports. I have shot the entire last NBA season with the 5d4. I guess I don't get the build concern, as the 5d has almost as good a build. You do lose burst rates though. The 5d4 high ISO and low ISO DR is great as well, almost there with the 1dx2.

If you have to get a 1d, get the latest, you will probably always regret not getting one if you go back to the 1dx. Might as well future proof as much as you can!

The 5D body isn't a slouch per say, but I'm a fan of a built in grip. I don't like adding a grip later. While I have shot with the 5D3 in the rain, I prefer to shoot with a 1D in the rain rather, because it is sealed better. The longer shutter life, quicker VF black out, faster frame rate, buffer that isn't hampered by the SD card (I have no experience on the 5D4 buffer, as I've only shot them 2x and they were my friend's, just like let me see that, oh click click, bye!) I'll be honest, I don't even know if the 5D4 has CF/SD or if it's both SD or both CF. I just remember that the 5D3 had a terrible buffer and the image quality between the 5D3 and 1DX, I always felt like I could get more out of the file with the 1D.

That's not to trash the 5D4 as I said, I don't have experience with it. I haven't liked the slower FPS, smaller buffer, additional grip, and longer VF black out before; I'm not sure I would like it now. So my decision is really, do I spend the extra money and buy a 1DXII and shoot it along side a 1DX, or do I just get what I'm familiar with and stick it out a bit longer.

I'm actually leaning towards the 1DX now because I settled with my insurance and accepted a lower pay out on my 300; with them basically saying, this is the payout, you can try to get it fixed but if it's more, you're on your own. It is coming back from Canon but I won't have it until Monday. I missed shooting Thursday, Friday, today, and tomorrow with it. I don't like the 70-200 2.8IS II with the 1.4XIII, so I've been shooting baseball with the 70-200. It sucks. So I'm thinking of getting a 1DX and then using the extra funds to pick up a used 100-400 just to have in a pinch if my 300 is out of commission.

I could lose any other piece of my kit and still have a redundancy, with the exception of my 300. I didn't realize how integral that was to my sports.

Rob,
I was following your insurance story....
What happened with the 300 and insurance?
Last I had read, the repair bill was cursory so werent you going to ask Canon for deeper look?
If insurance only acknowledges first pass repair estimate, how could they limit the coverage if additional repair needed? Could you pay Canon for internal evaluation for damage without having to pay the first repair bill so that if it gets totaled, you'll only be out the evaluation fee and not repair fee?

My two cents on your delemma....
You indicate you still have a 1dx already, get the 5div used or referb with very little risk. Add a grip and try it. If you don't like it, reselling won't cost you much. But you might like some of the newer technology advantsges mentioned above, plus you get the new toy factor.

I may be missing a detail in between but the 300 story went like this;
Estimate one was very low. I had to call Canon and say, you realize that not everything is on here, things that I can clearly see are the problem. It didn't take much to see that it needed a new barrel, it was cracked FFS. Canon sent a new estimate and it was about triple. Then I had to call the insurance and they approved that. So Canon then restimated it and it ended up almost 1900 dollars, without the hood/gelatin filter (which is complete nonsense to me that CPS/Service cannot give me a quote/provide those from their shop).

In the meantime, I was renting a 1dx, 24-70, 300. That bill was quite pricey. I was going to need to extend for upwards of 10 days and my claims rep said that we are still in the "repair" versus replace window. I said, ma'am, you can get a used 300 2.8IS for 3K, cheaper if you bargain shop. Why in the world would we spend 2000 dollars, plus 400 for a hood, plus 140 for the gel filter (and those were sale prices, the insurance company will NOT accept sale prices or private party sales). She said oh wow, well can you find one used from a known retailer? We found a couple that were within the ball park. She said but your policy is supposed to be CURRENT model replacement. I said at this point I don't really care, I need to get back in business and I don't want to deal with rental fees, paying out of pocket/waiting for reimbursement. So they settled with me on what the cost of a refurbished 300 f/2.8IS II cost.

There was a caveat on that; I am allowed to have my 300 repaired, but if the repair bill exceeds the cost of the 300 refurb, I'm SOL. Basically it was "this is us settling the claim."

The insurance baffled me because they wouldn't let me apply my CPS discount to any repair. They would not allow me to use private party sales. They would not allow me to use sale prices. Which in the end turned out fine since they applied a depreciation to my items.

After they settled with me, I asked Canon to estimate the repair with my CPS Platinum discount, crossed my fingers that it would not need more, and here we are.

Just as additional info, the 5d4 is cf/sd, and doesn't have the slow buffer issue on the sd slot. Its IQ is very good, I liked the 5d3, but the 5d4 seems to be a good evolutionary step up.

I understand the grip factor, it definitely evens out the body/lens combos!

These are 1Dx II high speed sequences of the kind that were rarely in focus with the 1Dx, although I worked very hard it it with the 1Dx. Since the lens is 200/2 at 2.0, focus errors are visible. Although Nola, the Newfoundland working here, is 120 pounds, she is quite explosive with her movements, and is hard to focus-track with the black face and all.

Have not sold the 1Dx, but I now always use the Mark II when this kind of focus is important. I do not see, though, a lot of image quality difference between the two cameras for my use, which is rarely above ISO 2000.

9-pont zone focus with Versatile tracking algorithm is in use here on the 1Dx II.

John - nice series.
Rob -
So it sounds like you could get a refurb 300f2.8ii or gamble with the refurb cost on getting it repaired for less. Do I have not right? Thanks for sharing.

That's correct and I opted to have gamble with my 300 repaired, as I am a platinum cps member and I receive a substantial discount on repairs (a discount in which my insurance company would not listen to).

To be honest, my 300 2.8IS version I compares so nicely with version II, that I can't say that I really have any need to change out to version II. Perhaps with TC the newer one is better. I don't know.
