I have been frustrated for years with the look of my images once I upload to the web. I do see small differences between sites online but overall I never feel the image looks as good as it did when it was in LR or photoshop.

I just feel the color tones don't look as good and the clarity and sharpness seem to dull.

Do others find the same to be true? Is there any trick to saving for the web that retains the look in the editing software?

i.e. what colour space are you using in LR ?

web sites and browsers use SRGB don't they ?

I use SRGB. I don't think thats the issue. When you save for web you feel the saved file has the same clarity and sharpness as the image when viewed in LR or PS?

From the sharpness side. Are you resizing your images to the desired side or letting the sites do that? Often the sites do not do a good job.

If resizing what method do you use? What do you do for sharpening?

For PS I use Save for Web. The Embedded Colour Profile and Convert to sRGB boxes are checked. Do you use LR's export page? You can select the colour space, size and sharpening amounts amongst other things.

How about an example.

I kinda asked some questions while you replied. I'll do a screen shot of what is in my screen and what is on the web.

The above image on the right was from Mac's preview. This one I opened in PS to make sure the sizes were the same.

FM on left. PS on right

The first full image was from FB. This one was loaded directly from my desktop to FM.

As you said before some sites seem to do a poor job resizing. I typically upload to flickr. Is there a size I should be resizing my images to for the best results?

I also have found that "save for web" gives me better sharpness then saving the file in other ways. I do feel save for web can give it an odd sharpening look at times.

Well I mostly resize to 1024 on the long side for most of everything I post on these sites. Some here post much bigger. Not sure what difference it makes whether you are a member or not and what the max size is. As a member I can upload directly from my desktop but never looked into max sizes.

Also you should do final sharpening after resizing when using PS. LR does that for you during export.

Make sure you have these selected. I use Bicubic, not Bicubic sharper for reduction.

Here are a few videos.

This one spends time on sizing for print and upsizing but discusses Bicubic

Thanks a lot for the video links and info. I have been annoyed with this issue for some time now. Maybe I am just being picky but it bugs me when a photo looks worse online.
