The fact in the press release it states for sports, I would not be surprised if they tweaked the D810 sensor to give it more ISO, equivalent to the D750, 7-8 fps, better buffer rate, D5 autofocus, articulating touchscreen and keeping it at 36 MP.
Sports shooters are not going to need 46 or higher MP, neither do wedding photographers. If it is still at 36MP with better high ISO performance and a complete upgrade of the autofocus, it will make it the best pro-sumer camera on the market.
The "sports" aspect is probably in crop mode, which would be acceptable given it's an "all round" type camera.
1.2x crop on ~46MP is ~32MP, so they could beat or match their closest price competition in both resolution and FPS if they wanted to in that mode. 1.5x crop would be around 20 MP.
They also have pretty huge buffer capability, especially with XQD helping - with any luck we will get more than 1FPS on FF but I'd guess that's less likely. I'd be happy with 6/7/8 FPS for FF/1.2/1.5, any more would be fantastic.
