I have the zoom, but other than a big telephoto for birds, I really am not comfortable with zooms, must be my decades of Large Format work.
How does the Pro zoom compare at 17 or 18mm with the prime? I realize it is not really a proper comparison, but I am thinking of selling the zoom, but need something in the mid range equivalent of 35mm Full Frame.

Herb

As far as the Olympus 17/1.8 prime lens is concerned the test reports show that it's only as good as the 12-40/2.8 PRO at 17mm.

I am thinking that the new Olympus 17/1.2 PRO which will be announced real soon would be a significantly better lens.

Aside from the DoF difference, the 12-40 pretty much rivals any prime within its focal length

In other words, unless you need to shoot at faster than f2.8, there isn't an IQ advantage, though the 12-40 is a little bulky on a smaller body

Much appreciated replies. I need to shoot more with the zoom to get a comfort level. I have a Leica 24 f3.8, might check the images against that. It is a quite small lens, aspheric and highly spoken of. The bulk of the zoom is a bit off putting.

Depends on the body you are using. On a Pen-F a small prime or compact zoom is perfect. The 12-40 PRO or any of the PRO lenses balances well on the E-M1 or E-M1.2 bodies.

I have both. No difference in image quality on my EM5(1st generation)

I found the 12-40 PRO to be sharper than the 17/1.8 when both were stopped down around f/4-5.6, especially in the corners. The 17/1.8 had some field curvature.

Then again, this is comparing with the good copy of the 12-40 I had. I also tested 3 other copies of the 12-40 (all Olympus refurbished) that showed noticeable decentering.
